Arguemnt65:
In this memo, the president of a chain of cheese stores intend to convince us that by stopping stocking imported cheese and focus primarily on domestic cheeses stocking, the company can reduce expenses and make profit. To support the conclusion, the arguer takes a recent survey of the World magazine as evidence. In addition, the arguer points out that the best-selling cheeses, last year, was all domestic cheeses. This argument seems too reasonable to some extent, however, it reveals several critical fallacies that make it unconvincing as it stands.
First of all, the argument is based on the hasty generalization that all brands of domestic cheeses would sell well than imported cheeses. The evidence, president provides, that five best-selling cheeses at newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses last year is problematic in several places. First, the only one store’s situation cannot represent all the stores throughout country. Perhaps the citizen’s tasty living in the local area where the newest store is located is very different from others in the country.(这句话看不懂) Or maybe those people are relatively poorer, and the prices of domestic cheesiest are significant lower than imported ones, so that people are prefer to the cheaper ones. But this special case cannot reflect the truly situations in major big cities. Second, merely considering one year is far from adequate. Perhaps last year, the newest store carried out some movements to discount all the domestic products for simulating its selling, so that the domestic cheeses are more popular than imported ones. But in the previous year, the cases were totally different.
Another major problem in this argument is relied on this recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine. The president does not provide any more specific information about the survey, including its procedure, the amount of sample, detail statistics and when was the survey conducted. Without this further information, we cannot confirm the fact that the preference of domestic cheeses are increasing among people over the world. Also, even the survey is reliable, but(yet) this survey only reflects the general tendency in the world, rather than in the United States. So it does not necessarily mean that all Americans’ preferences are the same as the people of any other country. Perhaps the research taken in United States, in the contrary, indicates that people are prefer imported cheeses.
Last but not least, the arguer’s conclusion is also unwarranted, that by limiting inventory of varieties of imported cheeses could inevitably make considerable profits for the company. Undoubtly, company can save expense through reducing inventory, but the arguer’s latter suggestion that concentrate on domestic cheeses will increase the number of storages. What’s more, beyond simply adjusting the inventory, the president fails to take into account others factors that might weaken this recommendation, including the product’s price, serves, market’s investigation and so forth. Without ruling out considering other possible methods, it is hard to agree with the president that the limiting imported cheeses is the most effective way for stores to make profits.
To sum up, the argument is not well reasoned. To make it logically acceptable, the arguer would have to demonstrate that people in United States have a preference on the domestic cheeses. Additionally, the author must provide more evidence to rult out all the above-mentioned possibilities that might weaken the argument. To better evaluate it, I also need to know whether there are other policies that are better than limiting inventory.
