TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

In this era of world with advanced technological change leading to complexity, modernization plays a significant role in facilitating the life of populace. And traditions as the mores springing from the forbears are gradually ignored and supplanted by the modernization. However, in my point of view, tradition which reflects the human nature is the precious treasure to the world and preserving the tradition contributions to the modernization.

Tradition is the accumulation of the habits and mores of ancestors. It is the special meaning decided the tradition can be handed down. Consider the wedding customs which include the complex rituals. Visiting both parents at home, taking an oath in church, wearing the white dress on the wedding, honeymoon and so forth. All of these express the trust between the couple, the wish from others, the worship to the love. With these traditions people experience the purifying of the soul and arise the reverence to human nature.

Modernization, coming into being due to the development of the world no matter in economy or industry, stems from the improvement and change of the tradition. The fashion in clothes is a case in point. From cotton to silk, from dress to skirts, every designer is inspired by the traditional clothes and the far-reaching values people like. On the basis of the tradition, they innovate continually in order to adapt to the step of the society as well as cater to the taste of people. Also, the tradition exchanging the material to satisfy the needs of both sides finally results in the emergence of money. And, the tradition using and circulating the money lead to the form of bank which is the crucial modern element in the development of economy. In short, it is the tradition formed in people's daily life propels the modernization.

Thus, only through compromising the tradition and modernization can we preserve the local culture as well as progress the world. Tradition is propitious to color people's tedious life and liberate people from the unemotional machine brought by the modernization. However, the modernization can bring out the original element to the tradition which injects the new energy. The world is replete with the examples, especially in the architecture to show the collaboration between the tradition and modernization. Consider the Bird Nest(Beijing National Stadium), a landmark not only for the Olympic Games but also for the architecture history of the world. The shape of the stadium is a traditional nest, however, many modern elements adds to strengthen its function, consequently the compelling appearance and practical function centralize on the stadium. Above example shows the tradition and modernization can be a perfect integrity instead of incompatible units.

All in all, the world challenge as well as the instruments we use may be new, but those values which success reckon on is what the tradition reveals as hard work and honesty, courage and curiosity, tolerance and fair play, loyalty and patriotism. In this sense, balancing the tradition and modernization we can reap a lot.
