TOPIC: ARGUMENT235 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the general manager of KNOW radio station.

"Several factors indicate that radio station KNOW should shift its programming from rock-and-roll music to a continuous news format. Consider, for example, the number of older people in our listening area has increased dramatically, while the total number of our listeners has recently declined. Also, music stores in our area report decreased sales of recorded music. Finally, continuous news stations in neighboring cities have been very successful, and a survey taken just before the recent election shows that local citizens are interested in becoming better informed about politics."

Before changing the rock-and-roll program risking losing even more listeners, the specious recommendation should be closely examined. First, other possibilities might be responsible for the total decrease in the listeners. Also, the declined sale in record cannot reasonably show the people's decreasing preference on the rock-and-roll music. In addition, what is successful in neighboring cities might not come to play in our city.

To begin with, the real reason for the decreasing listeners might not be people's changing preference when the actually age structure of the population and factors involved in program making are taken into account. Although the number of older people has a significant increase, the percentage of the aged people take in the whole population might still be small and it might even be the case that the increase in number, albeit dramatic, shows little difference in the final ratio. If so, older people are not a key factor influencing the listeners. Even if there is a rise in the percentage of old people, it still remains a question if people shut their radio because of the type of music. Common sense informs me that a myriad of factors might cause the declined popularity of program. Such factors include the quality of the music, the organization of the program, etc. Therefore, the argument fails to establish a convincing correlation between the type of music and the number of listeners.

Another piece of evidence the argument provided is also in doubt, considering the different forms between record and radio, and the type of music of the record for sale. It is actually not mentioned in the argument the sale trend of rock-and-roll record music. Even the total sale of recorded music might fall, generated by perhaps a depression in local economy, the sale of rock-and-roll music might remain the same or increase. People like rock-and-roll music are usually young men and women and these groups of people tends to care less and plan less on spending money to their favorite things, such as music record. Even if the sales of rock-and-roll recorded music indeed fell, related with local economy depression or other possible factors, people can still listen to radio because radio station does not charge for listening. Therefore, the fall in sale of recorded music lends scant support to the conclusion that less people like rock-and-roll music.

Also, potential difference of people's preference will fail the analogy between neighboring cities and our city and the success in other city will not guarantee the same result. It is entirely possible that people in the neighboring cities are more eager to the politics than our residents and the station was very familiar with how to make mew format popular in the residents. Nevertheless, our residents might be more interested in amusements. Had possible difference between the residents of two cities remain unconsidered, the argument cannot convince me effectively.

All in all, the argument is not as convincing as it stands. One might want to make more investigations before a hasty conclusion is made.
