TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.
"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

1. 两校的有关数据不具有可比性。因为明显对mvc的限定更多，比如“通知了有关部门的”、“全日工作”、“毕业后三个月内”等条件没有对gmc做有关限定。

The president of Mira Vista College (MVC) asserts that they should offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills. The argument is based on the fact that MVC has a lower percentage of the seniors who find jobs from perspective employers than Green Mountain College (GMC) does and GMC has more business courses and job counselors than MVC does. I find this argument logically flaws in several aspects.

To begin with, the comparison between MVC and GMC is incomplete and hence the data given by the argument is pointless. The only thing we know about GMC is that 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors of GMC had job offers from prospective employers. However, when things come to MVC, the statement bears more limited. Firstly, the data of MVC is only limited in the students who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment. It is entirely possible that there were still some students wanted to find jobs but had not informed the office. Secondly, the jobs that MVC's students found are full-time jobs, while GMC's students may find both full-time jobs and part-time jobs. Thirdly, the data indicates that MVC's students found their employment within three months after graduation. Perhaps some of GMC's students find their jobs a year after graduation. In one word, the data provided by the argument to compare the employment rate between MVC and GMC is invalid.

Even if students of GMC does find their employment easier than students of MVC, there is no evidence show that it has something to do with the fact that GMC has more business courses and more job counselors. Perhaps the academic performance of students in GMC is better than that of students of MVC. Besides, it is possible that students of GMC have a better knowledge of taking advantages of the business courses and job counselors while the students of MVC do not. Therefore, I cannot accept the conclusion that MVC should offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors.

Finally, the argument provides no evidence that MVC's students is lack of competitive power because of there insufficient knowledge on resume writing and interviewing skills. The argument fails to take other possible factors into consideration. It is possible that previous graduates of MVC had a poor performance at work which makes MVC's students less competitive in the tournament of seeking jobs.

In sum, the argument draws a conclusion that MVC need to offer more business courses and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills based on the incomplete comparison and a logically flawed deduction. To better evaluate the memorandum I need to know the exact employment rate of both GMC and MVC and whether it is the business courses and job counselors that affects the difference between these to college.
