TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
Nowadays, our society is changing at such a breathtaking speed that many of us are only capable to cacth the most superficial meanings among which lies the immediate benefits to us. Some people today begin to claim that the study of history is valuable only when it is relevant to our day-to-day lives. The assuption of those people makes me a bit queasy that study of history when is not directly associated with our daily lives is a waste of time and money.
It's an era when time and money are matters that are most frequently considered by people. Many people make profits everyday without knowing where and how the arts of business come from. A number of factories foul the river, pollute the air while unware of the end of human what they do will bring. Many of the rich are busy with accumulating wealth regardless of the poor who are suffering from poverty and starvation in undeveloped countries. No mention the study of historic wars, disasters, and disease, which is too far way from their daily lives and business.
However, without the study of the past wars, no lessons that make for leadership and skill of negotiation can be taught both in military and in today's business. Without the study of the disasters result from destructive human activities in history, no conclusion can be drawn to indicate the correlation of human behaviors and nature. Without the study of genesis of disease, we mankind would be still in the fight against variola. Without the study of various causes of historic wars, it's hardly to know that the ever-expansive unbanlance between the rich and the poor will lead to voilence and upheaval. Though none of those studies is directly relevant to human's day-to-day lives, no one of us can deny the fact that they do speak volume to human's progress and development.Hence, whether the study the history is of value can't be judged by that if it is firmly associated with our daily lives, since there are many potential treasures in it need to be dig out by ourselves.
History is like a huge forge, in which human intelligences are melting together. History equips us with desire, experience, inspiration, sence of self-identification, and solutions. Many achievements in science stem from the inspirations provided by history studying. Jus as Isaac Newton said(and I paraphrase): I can see further because I am on giants' shoulder. History offers scientist a foundation to promote the scientific frontier a step further. The study of history in art also bring about new ideas. By study of the master pieces of renaissance, we can obtain the ideology in that century, which enlighten the artists today on the way to get his emotion and desire through effectively and efficiently. Also, from the study of history, the conclusion drawn by historians that human society is periodic and go forward makes the mass who are in surfferings maintain the belief in a bright future. Though the scientists, artists, or the historians can not enhance the quality of their daily lives, nor can they bring immediate profits or benefits to our day-to-day lives, what they obtain from history studying is of great value. The allegation that study of history is only to enrich one's daily life is obviously incongruous with the truth.
To study history is also valuable to a country as a whole, which is none of the business of one's daily life either. History provides data and evidence about how a country is formed and how it interact with the world. To study history offers an opportunity for citizens to better understand their country and culture, build a sense of national self-confidence, and strenghthen the national cohesion, which are determine factors to a strong country. While a contry enjoys prosperity is an ensurance for citizens' well-being and bright future, the study of history is an issue beyond people's daily lives.
To be certain, there are a number of people still believe that only the things which can show immediate benefits are of value. But for most individual and groups, I believe, to the study of history is not merely to enrich the daily lives, it is more a tool to make for a better future for everyone. |
