我的第一篇issue 请各位高手多多指教!!谢谢^^ 写了1个多小时~~~~

95. People work more productively in teams or individually. Teamwork requires cooperation, which motivates people much more than individual competition does.

When will people work more productively, in teams or individually?
Which one is more motivated for people, competition or cooperation? These are complex issues raised by the title. Different people may have different answers based on their individual experience or culture background. In my view, people do work more productively than individually, as long as they are provided time and space for independent thinking. But the reason is not that because cooperation are more motivated than competition, but because of other merits cooperation offers.
When it comes to the second issue, I incline to believe that for individual’s competition is more motivated than cooperation. In addition, cooperation is more crucial for an organization’s long term productivity than individual competition.

First, people can be more effective when working in team instead of working individually. There are many reasons for this. For example, when people working in a team, they can exchange ideas about the work, during which people can find the merits and weakness of their own plan and even get inspiration through communication. In addition, by working together each individuals are creating a hard working atmosphere for others; and when we meet obstacles or be frustrated we can get courage and warm from our co-workers. Most of us might have experiences that when we are working alone, we feel boring and exhausted, but if we have a companion who is also on overtime, we will fill more fresh. All these merits of teamwork contribute to one’s individual productivity.

Second , when it comes to the motivation underlying people’s efforts, however, I tend to believe that the feeling of competition overdoes the obligation of cooperation. Although in some jobs, the obligation to keep up with the work pace of the coworkers in the producing –line or ensure the establishment of a common goal or meet time lines make the individuals improve their productivity,
the further improvement of productivity above this baseline might not due to this obligation at all. Moreover, in other types of jobs individual competition and ambition are the keys to productivity. For example, for a salesperson whose compensation, and sometimes tenure and potential for promotions as well are based on comparative sales performance of coworkers, competition is definitely the motivation of improving his productivity. Working as competitors a firms individual salespeople maximize productivity—in terms of profit—both for themselves and the company.

On balance, however, my view is that cooperation is more crucial for an organization’s long term productivity than individual competition. Even in the job where individual competitiveness is part –and –parcel of the job, the importance of cooperation should not be underestimated. Competition among sales people can quickly grow into jealous, back-stabbing,
and unethical behavior—all of which are counterproductive. And even the most successful entrepreneurs would no doubt admit that without the cooperative efforts of their subordinates, partners, and colleagues, their personal visions would never become reality.

In sum, although people do work more productively in teams than individually, as long as they are provided time and space for independent thinking, for each individual competition are more motivated than cooperation. But in the long term, cooperation is more crucial than individual competition for the production of the entire organization,.
