As the developmentof modern times, more and more attention are being put to education, especiallyhigh degree education. How to improve the quality of higher education? Theanswer is so complex that there are a variety of experiments being done on it.It is said that the effective method is to require all faculty to work outsidethe academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
It sounds like "Practice makesperfect"; however, is it the truth that the more practice, the higherquality of instruction?

First of all, howto improve the quality of college education depends on how to define thepurpose of it. If the purpose of education is just to instruct some lifeskills, of course it is really important to most of us, the more professionalpractice is help for teaching as well as learning. However, the purpose ofeducation is not only how to survive in this post-industry or information age,but only pursuit of knowledge and truth and calling for social awareness. Maybesomeone would argue that these are something beyond everyday life and rooted inindividuals' inner hearts which do not have much business of college. But asthe most significant organization influencing mental life in our times, collegeshould take the responsibility to calling for the pursuit of knowledge andtruth, social awareness besides life skills. If all faculty spent time workingoutside, it is entire possible that the campus would turn to a company ormarket but not a garden for spiritual blooming and fruit - what is the realmeaning of college.

As discussedabove, since college as a guider to better life as well as better humanity, themethodology of it includes
bothsomething internal and something external.
In the respect of some humanities and pure subject which are morerelated to one's internal mind, such as literature, art, and physics,professors are more likely to tend to practice in creative fields (writingcritics and fictions, drawing oil-paintings, composing music, or doing someexperiment, etc) rather than working in a company even it has something to dowith their focuses.

On the hand, inthe respect of the some subjects relevant to techno ledge and service, such ascomputer science, business, and architecture design, the professional practicewill promote the academic learning and researching. For instance, the professormay discovery some bugs while working with selling software, and then he or shecould bring this problem back to college for further researching. In fact, thisis exactly what some soft and internet companies, including Microsoft, Googleare doing - cooperate with academic world and make them both to win.

In conclusion, thepractice of academic actually would do good to some theory research; however,it is not wise to call for all of the faculty to work outside campus, even onthe related fields. Guiders’ responsibility is more about pursuing anddiscovering rather than business. In this rushing and business time, moreoptions and freedom should be offered to campus, for the farther and betterfuture of ourselves.
