题目:ARGUMENT162 - A recent study shows that people living on the continent of North America suffer 9 times more chronic fatigue and 31 times more chronic depression than do people living on the continent of Asia. Interestingly, Asians, on average, eat 20 grams of soy per day, whereas North Americans eat virtually none. It turns out that soy contains phytochemicals called isoflavones, which have been found to possess disease-preventing properties. Thus, North Americans should consider eating soy on a regular basis as a way of preventing fatigue and depression.

In this argument the author recommends that North Americans should consider eating soy to prevent fatigue and depression. To support this recommendation, the author cites the following facts about Asians: (1) they suffer less chronic fatigue and depression than the North Americans; (2) they eat soy everyday. Close scrutiny of each of these facts, however, reveals that none of them lend credible support to solve the problem.

First, the Asians suffer less chronic fatigue and depression no not necessarily indicates that this is the effect of taking soy. For the Asians, working pressure is much lower than that of North Americans. For that matter, perhaps the majority of Asians is satisfied with one cup of tea everyday, and the salary fully enough to make the whole family survive. Unlike Asians, North Americans are more willing to make the life more luxurious, which cost them a lot of money, and need them to spend much time on work. In short, without ruling out other possible reasons for the low chronic fatigue and depression rate of Asians, the author cannot convince me on the basis of them that soy made the low rate.

Secondly, even if the Asians eat soy everyday, the author assumes further that the Asian people have a low chronic fatigue and depression because of them eat soy. Soy, as is proven have disease-preventing properties, can have some effects on solving the disease, yet how much soy can be used to cure the disease? The author provides no useful data on this. 20 grams of soy may be not enough to prevent chronic fatigue and depression. In addition, the cooking method of Asian is different from North Americans, thus the North Americans may loss the disease-preventing properties of soy while cooking.

Finally, the author recommends that North Americans should eating soy regularly to prevent fatigue and depression. Yet the soy could be used to prevent chronic fatigue and depression, and have nothing to do with the rapid fatigue and depression. Besides, eating soy may be not so pleasure to North Americans that their stomach is not suitable. In addition, soy may be cheap in Asia, while it is so expensive in North American that with the same money, people can go to the drug stores to get some pills.

In sum, the recommendation relies on certain doubtful assumptions that render it unconvincing as it stands. To bolster the recommendation, the author must provide clear evidence--perhaps by continental study to find out why Asians have low rate of chronic fatigue and depression. To better assess the recommendation, I would need to know how much soy is useful coping with chronic fatigue and depression. I would also need to know why soy can prevent rapid fatigue and depression.
