等了一个学期,终于等到了自己觉得比较对胃口的课。美国的规划对于理论和数据要求很严格,反倒对于技术方面强调的不多,因为我是urban design concentration的,所以个人对和技术以及实例相关的东西更感兴趣一些。下面介绍一门PennDesign规划系的urban design concentration学生必修的一门课,CPLN 708-Urban Design Methods

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
! w4 [% S2 u1 `1 A$ u4 K- dThis course is designed as an introductory survey of urban design
, L! e" c( l; Z% hmethods associated with both practice and research. The course begins with a series of discussions
+ _1 T- W* E7 b, @$ ~on the field of urban design, attempts at definition, history of the field, basic epistemology, traditional6 N, s" ~' e `7 ]

The first half of the course concerns issues and methods in urban design practice, situated either in- m; f3 [. g: A
the private or public sector – including both direct and indirect design. Topics to be covered in this3 R$ d: ~4 C$ ]# V4 w
portion of the course include: design processes, land use controls and development standards, code
8 ^2 _1 S5 ~; }7 \5 l- Rwriting, regulation, design guidelines, non-computational representation techniques, design! b( {* L2 v& T! q
participation, urban design planning and strategizing.

The second half of the semester then focuses on urban design research methods in both professional) {4 Y9 }- `9 t# S! \
and academic settings. We will review common models of research design within the field and the' A! u1 L1 p; g2 X% n
increasing use of social science methods in response to external pressures. Students will be exposed
! |: t* E9 T" R8 Z# Ato various research methods used to understand and analyze urban form, social behavior and
6 E* |6 ~$ r% v {1 m# U, renvironmental psychology. We will also examine various methods in built environment analysis,
2 v: t6 u' K( E* `4 G0 Lincluding both morphology and typology. Both qualitative and quantitative methods will be examined
