COURSE DESCRIPTION:
* Q u' B6 @: B/ _1 G k1 `This course is designed as an introductory survey of urban design

on the field of urban design, attempts at definition, history of the field, basic epistemology, traditional

The first half of the course concerns issues and methods in urban design practice, situated either in" l% ]( `! Y4 ~- b. o' ?

portion of the course include: design processes, land use controls and development standards, code' Z1 n9 T! E. ^5 P: v" N* y
writing, regulation, design guidelines, non-computational representation techniques, design

; ~9 Y2 V7 w4 |# Oincreasing use of social science methods in response to external pressures. Students will be exposed
8 f4 }7 _# c- gto various research methods used to understand and analyze urban form, social behavior and
8 N0 c: `8 n$ Z" _% _environmental psychology. We will also examine various methods in built environment analysis,

This course is a spatial method elective core requirement for the City Planning masters degree and

recommended for students who intend to practice either direct or indirect urban design, as well as
