COURSE DESCRIPTION:

methods associated with both practice and research. The course begins with a series of discussions
7 _' k1 v) a* J( yon the field of urban design, attempts at definition, history of the field, basic epistemology, traditional

7 V9 W3 z: `( X9 W& dThe first half of the course concerns issues and methods in urban design practice, situated either in
, W) _4 q9 U; r) E/ Dthe private or public sector – including both direct and indirect design. Topics to be covered in this
, z+ q j' V9 q T) v- zportion of the course include: design processes, land use controls and development standards, code

participation, urban design planning and strategizing.

The second half of the semester then focuses on urban design research methods in both professional

increasing use of social science methods in response to external pressures. Students will be exposed

environmental psychology. We will also examine various methods in built environment analysis,

This course is a spatial method elective core requirement for the City Planning masters degree and
