Issue11:All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world’s most persistent social problems.


Through television, internet or other medias, it is normal for people to see the news that scientists and leaders from different countries are anxious about the world’s most persistent social problems. Then the issue arises, that should all nations help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the search of solutions to these social problems？I basically agree with this idea due to the great benefits it will bring about to the whole world, although we may meet some difficulties in the process.

One of those great benefits is that a global university will create an environment for cultivating an international spirit through the interaction among students and faculties from every country. People learning and living in the same university will have more opportunity to communicate with each other, in this case, they are able to have a better understanding and learn to be tolerate of other cultures, and in turn cooperate to solve problems. This sense of cooperation is of quite significance especially when they become the leader of their countries. They are aware of that no single country can solve social problems such as environmental pollution, energy crisis and conflicts between nations alone, the only solution is to work together. On the other hand, a global university provides a place for professors to make researches together, for instance, about alternative energy.

Another positive effect is that a global university could offer students the best education due to the marriage of good sides of Eastern and western education, since education always plays a key role in solving those persistent social problems. As we know, in counties like China, schools pay much attention to teach students basic principles and accounting, so Chinese students are very good at mathematics. On the contrary, schools like in America pay attention to cultivate students’ creativity, so American students are good at creating. A global university would be able to make the match of them possible, and nurture more competitive students for solving those social problems. On the other hand, students could bring new advancing techniques back to their own countries, and thus the education of the whole world will be improved, which is important for the solution to those problems.

In sum, I concede that there would be some difficulties in the process of establishing a global university like the huge financial investment, and the proportion of financial investment according to the different economic power. However, problems like this could be dealt with after discussion, and it is not a big deal compared with the benefit that a global university will help to solve the most persistent social problems.
