170"The surest indicator of a great nation is not the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but the general welfare of all its people."
Nowadays, more and more people are arguing about the definition of a great nation. The speaker believes that the general welfare depends most, whereas I consider that the surest indicator of a great nation is not only the accomplishment of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but also the general welfare of its entire people, which is attributed to the former to a large extent.
Most people agree that the rulers of a country serve its people a lot. They train the military as well as set up the laws to safeguard its people; they establish the economic system to keep the society well-balanced; likewise they response promptly to reduce people's loss when calamities come. Furthermore, the ruler's achievements in diplomacy also guarantee its people peaceful life. A widely known example is that Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, who saved the Union from disintegration and eliminating slavery in America, guide his people in the correct direction.
In addition, the accomplishment of artists also benefits the citizenry greatly. Painters tend to edify people and make them ponder. Eximious music opus can make people clam down when they are nervous or bestir them when they lose heart. Fine crafts impart nice feelings and make their lives more convenient. On the whole, art help us appreciate our own humanity and the works of artists themselves sure to be a significant fortune of our society.
So does sciences, which contribute more. The inventions of multifarious household electrical appliances make things much more convenient for the people. The achievements in medical science ensure people healthier life no matter in physical or in mental. The natural sciences which can forecast natural calamities enable people get ready for it so as to alleviate the damage. More and more satellites being launched into space also serve people enormously. For example, it helps the scientists supervisory control our environment. Besides, what I need to warn is that not all the achievements of scientists are beneficial to us. Cloning, for instant, will violate public morals and ethics if it is used illegally.
In summary, we should not separate the general welfare from the achievements of rulers, artists, or scientists when we are discussing the surest indicator of a great nation. All of them, in my opinion, should be considered as the influential factors. What's more, I believe the accomplishment of artists and scientists benefit not only citizenry of their country but also all people in the world.
