Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In university, students should take the history courses no matter what field they study in. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.(07/28/07)

As an old saying “history is a mirror to reflect yourself.” So there are many universities enforcing their students to paying much energy to learn history. However is it a wise behavior? I doubt it. From my personal standpoint, history knowledge is not necessary for everyone if your life has no more affiliation with it because of reasons below.

In the first place, learning history always occupies numerous time which present students are always lack of. University life is not so leisure as people consider, there are endless tasks to be waited in our schedule. So by what means can we regularly attend history class which is filled with extremely huge contents to learn? Take my self for example. As an engineering major student, I have to take 2 experiments per week averagely, and finish the experiment paper later also costs a certain amount of time. So how could I spare my limited time to listen to thousands of years’ historic stories? So, it is impossible for most of us to leave enough time to learn history.

Additionally, it is not interesting for everyone to study historic knowledge, which would make their feel humdrum on study. As is known to all, to learning history well only if you can remember numerous historic persons’ names and countless great events’ age. However it seems difficult to someone and reduce them the enthusiasm to learn. Form example, my brother is not a memory genius but he is really good at logical affairs and the rank-1 award in national mathematics competition could be evidence. But compelled to learn history for a long time, his passion on study is gradually reduced, and eventually, he didn’t pass the university entrance examination. In short, history is not a suitable subject for everyone.

Last but not least, the information of history is not clear and even reliable to learn. Due to the not advanced technology in ancient time, the records and information remained to today are less possible to represent the precious scenes about that period, so acquiring these knowledge is meaningless. For example, there are lots ancient relics remained in my city Xi’an. But the function of these antiquities and who created them are still mysteries, and many professors have debated them for years. Therefore, there is no value for us to learn such uncertain knowledge.

Admittedly, being familiar with history is sort of valuable for minor people. Nevertheless, to the majority, history class should not be required to attend since it costs much time, leads study to be more boring, and actually you even don’t know what you learn is genuine or not.
