Issue38

1. Admittedly, the vivid picture and excellent acoustics provided by television is more attractive than the tedious characters written on the papers. For example, I prefer to watch a series named Simon Schama's power of art rather than read the heavy book titled art history.

2. It is no doubt television is of paramount importance in education by motivating our interests, but when it comes to father study, book plays a more significance role. However, one television stations should put the profits into first place so as to exist in current highly-competitive media market. Consequently, the TV program people watch should not be general and recreational any more, it inevitably leads to lack of depth. To use the same example, the Simon Schama's power of art is fairly a wonderful series, but to be honest, how much you learn from it? So television can hardly take the place of books in study.

3 To some extent, our imagination and abstract thinking has being taken by the pictures and sounds provided by television. Just ask yourself, which act is more easy for you, watching TV or reading books? Most of us, I think, will choose former. Why? For example, when you read a novel, you will never see the scenes or figures barely from the character, what you can use is your imagination. On the contrary, vivid images provided by television easily deprive our imagination so that when we mention the character in the film adapted from a novel, we often take the actor as the character for granted.

4 As a desirable way of recreation ,television can not substitute for book in learning, especially  intensive study must be carried on by means of reading books ,which supply us a more comprehensive and critical perspective for study.

issue 45

As the group of people who is responsible for controlling and managing the whole country, government officials should be expected to be competent and responsible.

1 Government officials should judge the situation in advance instead of waiting the information and will offered by people ,if not ,it will lead to the lack of excellent opportunity even unpredictable outcome. Why? It is inevitable that the will of people can hardly be delivered to the government officials correctly and immediately due to several factors ,so making accurate and urgent decision is a gauge of efficiency of government. For instance ,Hurricane Katrina and Wenchuan Earthquake.

2 Government and its official elected by people should make every endeavor to represent people's benefit and carry out their will. If government officials rely on their own judgment without taking the will of people into account, it would lead to despotism.

3 But government should rely on their judgment by analyzing the situation carefully. Implementing people's unreasonable will can be counterproductive and harmful, which deviates from the original purpose of serving people.

In sum, government should be confident and determined to rely on their judgment basing on their people's reasonable will.

Issue1
What kind of people do you prefer someone who listen to you enjoyably and shares the common ideas or interests with you, or someone who always interrupts your comment and shows strong disagreement? Most of us, I guess, will choose former. Why? Withstanding opinions that contradict yours is really a suffering.

During most time of our lives, we learn more from the people whose views we share.

As a mirror ,the existence of dissenter examine our opinions and reveal the flaws we can hardly find by ourselves.

Whether disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning or not depends on your attitude towards it.

we should learn things from both。

Issue 27

Conventional practices and ways of thinking is one precise legacy left by predecessors, which instructs us to

Due to the dramatic change of society ,some conventional practices and ways of thinking fails to keep pace with the current situation ,which should be superseded by new one.

People should not cling to old practices and refuse to accept new things. The best way we treat conventional practices and ways of thinking is that distinguish the right from wrong.

Without conventional practices and ways of thinking, we are likely to make mistakes. But only by means of them , we will never achieve success.

The secret journal of Zhao Ziyang
Chinese whispers
May 21st 2009
From The Economist print edition
THE plaintive final public appearance of Zhao Ziyang on Tiananmen Square on May 19th 1989 was the curtain call(很好的暗喻) marking the end of a power struggle that had been raging for weeks around the squalid encampment(肮脏的营地里,贴切,视频里确实如此) of student protesters in central Beijing. Zhao was then still general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, but he had lost the battle with his hardline rivals. He died under house arrest four years ago, largely forgotten by the many inside and outside China who were mesmerised(这词啊!牛) by the country’s economic boom and wanted to forget the bloody culmination of the Tiananmen unrest.
Now Zhao’s insights into this struggle (secretly recorded on cassette tapes and smuggled out to friends) have been translated into English and compiled into a book. Until the appearance of this posthumous(死后发生的) work, not a single voice of dissent had ever emerged from the party’s inner circle, even from someone like Zhao who had been booted out(解雇) from it. (这句话不懂)Since the crushing of the protests, notwithstanding China’s rapid integration with the global economy, the interaction of its leaders has been veiled in even greater secrecy than it was 20 years ago.(good irony, make a dramatic comparison between the undeveloped political system with the rapid economic growth)
But even Zhao pulls his punches. He complains bitterly about his conservative rivals, some of whom are still alive but no longer politically active (as far as anyone knows). Yet he avoids dishing dirt on them personally.(Good word “Yet” 将他针对事不针对人的行为表达透彻)His invective is couched in the rhetoric of a loyal party man who feels uncomfortable about breaking the code of silence. Zhao says it was Deng Xiaoping who gave the order for the army to crush the Tiananmen Square protests. But he does not accuse him of wanting or even expecting the bloodshed that ensued on June 3rd and 4th 1989.(Deng xiaoping is definitely a great man , but his behavior that pay more attention to the economic growth while neglect the significance of reforming political system was the bane of this bloodshed)
The personalities of the protagonists (主角)and the outline of their struggles in 1989 have long been widely known, or at least guessed at, by China-watchers. The then prime minister Li Peng (now 80 years old and retired) is portrayed by Zhao as a particularly unpleasant and petty rival. Many days before Zhao was officially deposed, Mr Li, the reader is told, broke protocol by rushing out in front of Zhao when emerging from a van to meet students. (太funny了!!)The prime minister reportedly instructed that official cameramen avoid recording images of Zhao, just in case of future leadership changes.(A good sense of humour, maybe a little fake)
However, even if the book contains few startling revelations, it is fascinating for the way it conveys the flow of power in China at that time. (点名书中精华之处,让八卦的人调整八卦重心)Zhao may have been the party’s leading official, but it was Deng who ruled China from semi-retirement in his Beijing courtyard home.(垂帘听政) Leaders vie for Deng’s attention, struggling to glean the wishes (这动词太形象了!)of the 84-year-old (transmitted sometimes by a daughter or his secretary). At one point Deng’s deafness makes it difficult for Zhao to be sure that he has got his message across. (马的,这作者也真搞笑)Zhao also has to defer to other veteran revolutionaries, some of them deeply conservative. Visiting their courtyards to mollify them becomes a vital routine.
As Zhao describes it, Deng was more of an enabler than a man concerned with detail. Zhao himself is presented as the real architect of China’s economic reforms in the 1980s, with Deng helping to keep the conservatives at bay.(形象!) Zhao, however, was always cautious, both in pushing for economic change and even more so in the political realm.(递进的好!) He muses on the virtues of multiparty democracy, but the book also makes it clear that when in office he entertained no such thoughts.(没人知道多党制在中国的效果如何,但我们仍有发展民主的空间,比如放宽进入民主党的门槛) He wanted the party to be more open and accountable, but he had some misgiving about the “liberal and carefree” views of Hu Yaobang, Zhao’s liberal predecessor who was ousted as party chief.
Deng ignored Zhao and ordered the army to clean out the Tiananmen Square protesters without a leadership vote. He also put his party chief under house arrest with no regard for the party’s own rules. Yet, for years afterwards, Zhao still worried that Deng regarded him as disloyal. “I am truly unwilling to see him leave this world with this misconception,” Zhao records. Deng died in 1997, not having deigned to meet his faithful sidekick again.

——zhao
(the final public appearance at Tiananmen Square)
I think, the most desirable bravery is not to overcome the difficulty, but to face the history.

Is it often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public? To be sure, whether withhold information or not depends on different situationS.However, no matter how compelling reason showed, to withhold information from the public is to sacrifice people's right to know the truth, therefore, careful consideration should be given before any action.

Admittedly, withholding information from the public properly could bring more benefits than harms both individual and nation. For instance, if one successful political leader could always be confident and competent under the spotlight, it would help him to retain his prestige and administer national fairs more smoothly and effectively. In contrast, one political leader who deliberately expose his some flaws or eccentric preference that have no connection with his competence in politics to the public would probably win unnecessary antipathy from people, which exert negative influence on his work. When it comes to national interests, one film named Assembly can illustrate the significance of withholding information. The story happened during the World War Two that 47 soldiers took the responsibility to cover the troop's withdrawal and also were told to withdraw if heard the bugle for assembly. But the voice of bugle never closed to them, because the leader decided to protect the main force at the expense of these soldiers finally. Such withholding information is based on the premise that national interests come before everything else, which is cruel, but desirable.

Unfortunately, political leaders sometimes withhold information from the public in the name of maintaining social stability that deviate from the original purpose. In the last century, China underwent a series of reform led by Den Xiaoping, which was notable in the rapid growth of national economic and the policy of opening to the outside world. Nevertheless, leaders neglected the importance of reforming political system and still ruled the country by withholding information from the public despite people's demand for democracy. On June 4, 1989, thousands of students and workers who had stayed at Tiananmen Square for several days conflicted with the army, resulting in an unforgettable and unforgivable tragedy finally. From then on, China began to set foot on the path of reforming political system, althought we still have a long way to go, but both government and people are aware of the paramount importance of mutual trust and respect, which is the most meaningful thing we learn from this tragedy.

Government and its officers elected by people directly or indirectly should make every effort to represent the benefits of people and satisfy their reasonable demand. The most effective way is to let people know that what government can do and what government can not do. Only in this way are people willing to cooperate with government to realize the mutual goal they believe in .On the contrary, if government wished to win the favorable impression of people barely by making presumptuous promises and withholding information to hide their incompetence, it would only lead to the catastrophe of the whole society and nation. In sum, withholding information appropriately by political leaders is necessary even desirble, but please think twice before doing it.

issue11
Confronting with persistent social problems, is it necessary and possible for all nations to build a global university in order to cultivate students who can deal with them?

Admittedly, all nations , more or less ,faces several common problems, which would never be solved merely by certain countries, such as environmental problems. It is well known that a butterfly's wings might create a tornado in a certain location. Such butterfly effect applies to the protection of environment. The deterioration of every tree in the Amazon forest can easily exacerbate the global warming, therefore, it forces all nations to get together to approach these issues. One of the best examples is that after the Kyoto protocol was put in to effect, it limits the emission of CO2 effectively and efficiently, which reveals the significance of collaboration between countries in solving the world's most persistent social problems.

Now that the efficiency of collaboration is evident, is it an effective way that building a global university to deal with the social problem? The possibility could not be ruled out that with the completion of this global school, new problems arise. What curriculum criterion and teaching content should be carried on in this university filled with a myriad of students from different places? Whose theory can be enough authoritative to be the standard in order to lead the orientation of teaching and research? Is it possible that some theories or standards conflict with the value system of students or benefit certain countries’s interest at the expanse of others'? For example, to solve the increasing population, China implemented one child policy since 1979, however, which would likely lead to a resistance where people hold the idea that such policy infringes human rights. In economic field, the purpose of introducing anti-dumping policy is to protect the developed countries’ interest ,at the same time, such policy takes way the precious opportunity of being prosperous from developing countries. As a result, it is really a hardship for one global university to set up one standard and carry on in an objective and just way.

Futhermore, as a saying goes --”There is no identical leaf in the world.” owing to the different social background, there is no almighty key to solve the problems in different countries, even the common ones. One common problem can be caused by different reasons in different areas. For instance, the increasing birthrate in china over past several decades was caused by the prevalent opinion proposed by Mao that strength lies in numbers. In contrast, common problem of population results from religious ideas that both Hinduism and Islam encourage early marriage and early childbirth so as to increase number of believers. Therefore, the solution of the population problem should be considered from different perspective judging by different situations in different areas. The establishment of one global university would probably fail to live up to the expectation of solving specific problem successfully in different countries.

In fact, building a global university is not the sole way to approach persistent social problems.  Instead, we definitely can adopt other means such as communication and cooperation with other countries on the premise that understanding the nature of the problem judging by certain social background from a comprehensive perspective.Only in this way can it prevent us from indulging in the solution which is suitable for others but would lead to counterproductive outcome in our nation.

1. The significance of the law is to safeguard the interest of a part of the population by means of neglecting even destroying that of others'.So the most objective and just law can hardly satisfy all the people's demand, which inevitably leads to discontent and complaint.

2. Should we disobey and resist laws which we consider unjust? However, the law which is on behalf of interests of minority at the expense of those of majority is also of paramount importance in the certain period of history. The law of twelve tables that represents the slave master' interests promoted the development of slave-owning economy. So the act of disobeying and resisting laws which you think unjust is immature and would bring more harms than benefits to the society as a whole

3. Neither just nor unjust, law only can be divided into two types-the one that keep out with time and another that is out of time. The most important thing we should do is to modify and correct the law with the changing time.

argument 242

In view of the success of honor code achieving in the Groveton ,the author claims that all college and universities should adopt similar honor code in order to reduce cheating., But under close scrutiny, the evidence writer provide to support his conclusion commit critical fallacy ,which fail to convince us.

To begin with, there is no guarantee that students who agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors would really keep their promises. No one likes to be regarded as a cheater, even though they may have ideas of cheating. And those who tend to cheat in examination prefer to hide their motive than expose it to others. Therefore, signing a honor code produces senseless influence on reducing cheating due to everyone will sign whether plan to cheat in the exam or not.

Secondly, the means that to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated is open to question. Such means basing on suspect can easily lead to the destruction of relationship between students. It also would lead to another extreme that students screen each other so as to cheat more successfully in exam. Such way of supervising instead of that of being monitored by teachers is likely to deviate from the original purpose and bring more detriments than benefits.

Furthermore, the statistics of only two years does not necessarily indicate that the honor code is successful. Without showing the number of cheating between the first and fifth year, we could not rule out the possibility that the low case of cheating in fifth year is just special and the situation does not change strikingly. Additionally, it is possible that the reducing cases of cheating results from the decreasing number of students in exams

Finally, the survey conducted solely by the Groveton honor council without supervision from other institute may serve for exaggerating the achievement of Groveton in reducing cheating, which can be highly suspected. The possibility that leading questions make a huge effect on the result of the survey should be taken into account.

In sum, without showing enough evidence to strengthen his conclusion, merely by some general statistics and one problematic survey ,the author fails to convince us that honor code is enough effective to be introduced in all colleges and universities.
