第二篇argument 没计时 写了很久 写得头昏眼花 腰酸背痛 腿抽筋!写得超级不爽!拍死我吧!
ARGUMENT173
The following is a memorandum issued by the publisher of a newsmagazine, Newsbeat, in the country of Dinn.
'Our poorest-selling magazine issues over the past three years were those that featured international news stories on their front covers. Over the same period, competing news-magazines have significantly decreased the number of cover stories that they devote to international news. Moreover, the cost of maintaining our foreign bureaus to report on international news is increasing. Therefore, we should decrease our emphasis on international news and refrain from displaying such stories on our magazine covers.'
The author of the memorandum made a suggestion that international news should be less emphasized by Newsbeat and refrained from displaying on the magazine covers based on three reasons given. The argument seems reasonable and plausible at first glance but a close examination reveals its logical flaws and unconvincingness.
The fact that poorest-selling magazine issues were those with international news covers does not necessarily imply that displaying international news stories on covers was the reason to blame. First of all, no evidence shows that all the issues featured an international news cover were poorly sold. It is possible that some issues with international news covers actually did very well in sales. Moreover, common sense tells me that a cover is an important component of magazine sale, however it is definitely not the only issue evoking publishers' concerns. Other factors that undoubtedly affect magazine sales like the over-all content of an issue, the accessibilities to readers, the price and even the free gifts packed inside should all be taken into account. Yet, the author also fails to consider if there were competitors that cover same international news stories with more interesting and profound analysis, which were preferred by old Newsbeat readers. So unless other factors having been ruled out, it is unfair to conclude that international news covers was the reason of poor sale.
Also, little information about why the competing news magazines cover less international news stories has been given in the argument, which makes weakens author's conclusion. Accordingly, several questions have to be answered before any hasty adjustment will be made in Newsbeat. Firstly does the decreasing number of international news stories help the sales of the competing news magazines? And are they expanding their markets to another age group readers, for instance, to attract a younger group of readers by replacing some international news pages with entertainment news? Or are they just simply short in budget to keep covering international news in their magazines? If these were the cases, the author would have made a poor recommendation of cutting down international news, since less competitors would only help Newsbeat to monopoly the news magazine market by keeping covering international news.
Meanwhile, the increasing cost of maintaining foreign bureaus may seem like an objective reason to support the author, however, a long-term perspective of development of Newsbeat is being neglected for two reasons. In the first place, the increasing cost of foreign bureaus may only due to temporary political or economic climate in that country, so the increasing probably will not last very long. In the second place, another cause of increasing cost may be the journalists there are tracking down some remarkable news resources ,which will bring significant benefits that could surpass the relatively large investment.
To sum up, the author's conclusion is invalid and even misleading in some extent. Therefore, further investigation is in need to provide more convincing proof and cogent reasoning about why those issues of Newsbeat resulted in poor sales and what action should be taken to prevent the adverse consequence. |
