In the editorial, the arguer claims thatcolleges or universities which have reported dramatic rise in cheating amongstudents should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton’s. To support the claim,the arguer notes that the cheating rate have decreased in Groveton and a surveyconducted by the Groveton honor council, which shows that students would beless likely to cheat with an honor code in place without. However, I can’t findthe arguer’s claim convincing for several reasons.
To begin with, the arguer fails to convinceme that Groveton’s honor code is necessarily more effective than its oldmonitoring system in preventing students from cheating. The arguer cites agroup of statistics to show that the cheating rate has decreased after the honorcode was adopted. But the statistics may not be reasonable(精确的？？如何表达), say,the students may not have reported all the cases of cheating. Moreover, it’s unpersuasiveto compare the figure of the first year with that of five years later. Unlessthe arguer shows the results of the second, the third, and the fourth year, itcan’t convince me that the cheating rate has decreased. In short, the figures can’tsupport the arguer’s claim
Secondly, the survey conducted by theGroveton honor council may not stand firm as it is quite possible that thestudents who are willing to reject cheating behavior are more interested intaking that survey. For those who may cheat in the exam, we can’t know whatthey really thinks about the survey. Besides, the credibility of the survey isopen to doubt given its loaded question.
Even the students said that they would beless likely to cheat in an exam, it doesn’t mean they would do as what theysaid.
Finally, even the code has been successfulin Groveton, it may not necessarily fit for other colleges or universities. Thecode may not be useful in other institutions than the former one and the resultcan be quite the opposite. Thus unless the arguer provides some evidence thatGroveton’s honor code can be successful in other universities, the arguer can’tconvince me that those institutions should adopt the code system.
In sum, the arguer’s claim is not wellsupported. To strengthen it the arguer must provide detailed evidence showingthat Groveton’s honor code is indeed superior to the traditional one, and thatGroveton’s honor code can also be fit for other colleges or universities. And Ialso need a trustable survey made among Groveton students to show that whatthey really feels about the system.
