The speaker asserts that the arts, such as painting, music, literature would reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. I partly agree with the opinion expressed above. In my point of view, it is culture which containing the category of art that has the fuction of reflecting social hidden conceptions and impulses.

  Culture is a concept which refers to the totality of socially transmitted arts, behavior patterns, beliefs, and all other products of human work and thought. It is evident that culture would infulence the shape of people's political, economic and behavioral arrangements. culture, on the other side, both creates a prism in which we understand society itself, as well as reflects the social conditions of the day. For example, Chinese surnames are originally derived matrilineally, for the chinese character for surname (姓) still contains a female radical, which suggests women's great social standing during the period of matrilineality.

  As an integral part of culture, artwork reflects the social during the period when it was created. In an unique way, the arts, such as painting, music and literature change the social realities and historical events to symbols and artifacts creatively. Each piece of art is a history reference of the society at that particular time. At the peak of Roman and Greek civilization, the need of religion came to provide the only regular commission for artists. And religious paintings were always to impress people's belief and morality. Paintings, sculptures or architectures in the Renaissance were always produced at the specific request of the King, the Pope, or a rich citizen, which is a reflection of a society that ruled by class division.

In sum, art may reveal the social hidden conceptions and impulses. And it help the realization of culture as the funtion of help people to identify and explain the nature of a society or a period.
