The editorial persuaded colleges and universities to adopt honor codes in order to prevent their students from cheating. At first, the author explains how the honor code functions, then making a contrast between the honor code and the old-fashioned system in Groveton. Supporting with the statistics, the author concludes that colleges and universities should replace their old-fashioned system into honor code. At the first glance, the logic of the editorial appears perfect, however, it is not telling the truth.

Fristly, It is quite doubt that how can the honor code function properly because some students in colleges and universities are dishonesty as the author supposed. He/she examplized that even under the circumstance of the severly monitered by teathers, thirty cases of cheating is reported on average every year. Then how can they expect the students to act self-dicipline just making them agreeing not to cheat. Moreover, reality is that most of students in college or university are unwilling to prosecute their classmates although they acknowledge the wrong thing of cheating because they are classmates and unwilling to make somebody in their class embarass. As a result, how can the new measure takes effect properly only by itself.  

What's more, the statistic the author given above is not cogent because it lacks the precondition. The statistic shows that the number of the cases of cheating on yearly average has gradually reduced. However, the reasons why the number dropped are various. Taking the student examination as an example, the reduction of the average number of student cheating probably due to the cancel several examinations of the subjects which are difficult for majority of students to manage.  As we all known, most of the students cheat in their examinations partly because they are not preparing properly for the examinations and afriad to fail, and partly aleatorily thinking that we will not be captured when they are cheating. In this circumstance, is there any simplest way for them to find to pass the examinations or to gain a better scores except cheating in their examinations? Really it's hard. Without examination, without cheating. So the cancellation of such obscure examinations can help reducing student cheating. In a word, the contrast between the past in which Groveton University did not adopt the honor code and the recent in which it adopted the honor code is week to prove the obvious influence on preventing student cheating.

In the end, the survey by the Groveton honor council is suspicious either. Because of the weekness to prevent the cheating, many students may expect such week measures to exist and that sweep the blocks to cheat.

To sum up, the author fails to convince the readers that the old-fashioned system should be replaced by the honor code, because the evidences cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the author maintians. To make the argument more convincing, it should convey more information and explain the unique characters to restrain students cheating. Additionally, he would have to make clear if the statistics made current and before is on the same bases. Therefore, if the argument had included the given factors discussed above, it would have been more thorough and logically acceptable.
