101.The following appeared in a memo from the president of a company that makes breakfast cereals.
"In a recent study, subjects who ate soybeans at least five times per week had significantly lower cholesterol levels than subjects who ate no soy products. By fortifying our Wheat-O cereal with soy protein, we can increase sales by appealing to additional consumers who are concerned about their health. This new version of Wheat-O should increase company profits and, at the same time, improve the health of our customers."

According to the memo, a current research demonstrates that eating soy products help reduce cholesterol levels, in this case, the president thinks of adding soy protein in their product to increase sales. In my opinion, it sounds good to add nutrition to improve sale profits and general health; however, by adding soy proteins based on the current research the memo talks about might not be as reasonable as the president thinks.

First, what type of soy products do the subjects in the research consume? There are different types of soy products out there and each of them might contain diverse soy proteins. Thus, the soy protein the cereal company adds may not actually improve the health of the general as they assume. In addition, the research does not say if all the benefits result solely from the soy protein. All the research concludes is that elements in soybeans have correlation to cholesterol levels in human body, which does not mean the soybean has direct and absolute effect on cholesterol levels. Regard of this evidence, to improve the general health by adding soy protein in the product might not be logical enough.

Moreover, the company should consider the invest and the profits if they add soy protein in their cereal. In order to add soy protein, they will need extra machines and equipments which they might not have currently, and they will need some experts to work with them. Besides the cost of new machines and employees, they also need new raw materials, which could be tons of soybeans. All these costs will definitely increase the price of their cereals, which might actually harm their sales. Furthermore, to people who believe in the effects of soy protein and always consume soybeans, keep eating natural soybeans might be better than eating the cereal with soy proteins, which might not be as natural as it used to be. Thus, it might not be true that more people will be attracted by the cereal with soy protein. And then, the reason to add soy protein in the cereal in order to increase sales and improve general health is not logical at all.

Above all, only based on the reasons listed on the memo, it might not be necessary to add soy protein in the product. However, it is a good idea to help improve people’s health as well as sale profits; the president and the company should evaluate all impacts behind the research and all possible effects on the decision before they actually make up their mind.
