TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

For students study is the activity to pursue the unknown or known knowledge from either class or their researches. A certain skepticism is pretty important for students in their study. However, over-questioning is not necessarily good for their studies.

To begin with, we must acknowledge that almost all of the important scientific discoveries are stemmed from the skepticism. Copernicus, a scientist respected greatly by people in our time, caste a skeptical question on the geocentric system. Although every common sense tells us that the earth is central of our universe, and the sun orbits around the earth. Fortunately, he doubts the common sense and tried to make people convinced his skepticism. With lots of mathematical research as well as careful observations, he did prove his skepticism that our planet is orbiting around the sun. Today, it becomes the common sense.

However, not every skepticism in our study can reverse the formal theories or attitudes and over-questioning never do well for our studies. Believe it or not, all the scientific researches today bases on the formal researches. As the Newton says "I am just standing on the shoulders of giants". Over-questioning means that one disagrees the formal theories unreasonable and without any scientific sense. Someone may argue during the study of mathematics that why it is the truth that "1+1=2" but not "1+1=3"; also the over-questioning person may arguer why the earth orbits around the sun in our solar system and it may be wrong for us to say that "the sun rising up in the east and descending in the west". Now, all of us are sure that this kind of skepticism--over-questioning--is no good for studies.


However, so what kind of skepticism is well enough for our studies. In my point of view, the wonderful skepticism should develop through several processes. Firstly, one should question himself that why the explanation goes like that and are there any other possibilities that we have neglect? Secondly, one should identify his own possibilities whether they are wrong or right through mathematical methods and experiments, of course, the studies from other people, too. Thirdly, one needs to make decision if his skepticism is reasonable and worthful for his further studies after his researches in order to improve his own studies and make another reasonable skepticism. Only in this way, can we do our researches or studies efficiently and interestingly; and only in this way, can we get more confidences during our learning process and strengthen our abilities to deal with unknown knowledge.


In a word, a certain skepticism which is reasonable and worthful is really necessary in the processing of our study, which prompts the researches to go further and makes their theories close to perfect as well as discovers unknown realms. However, over-questioning looks not as good as the reasonable and valuable skepticism, it makes people confusing, frustrated and also prevents the theory development.
