TOPIC: ARGUMENT185 - The following appeared in a letter from the owner of the Sunnyside Towers apartment building to its manager.

"One month ago, all the showerheads on the first five floors of Sunnyside Towers were modified to restrict the water flow to approximately 1/3 of its original force. Although actual readings of water usage before and after the adjustment are not yet available, the change will obviously result in a considerable savings for Sunnyside Corporation, since the corporation must pay for water each month. Except for a few complaints about low water pressure, no problems with showers have been reported since the adjustment. Clearly, restricting water flow throughout all the 20 floors of Sunnyside Towers will increase our profits further."

Based on the fact that only a few complaints about water pressure after restricting the water flow on the first five floors, the author claimed that, implicating that there would be no new problems, the Sunnyside Corporation could have confidence in restricting water force on all the 20 floors and therefore increase their profits. However, before restricting the water for all the tenements, deeper inspection needs to be taken,

In fact, the consumptions of water usage before and after the adjustment are not presented. It is entirely possible that people living on the first five floors use more water after the adjustment. It is understandable for people to take a longer shower with lower water pressure. When the water is too weak to flush out the tiredness, people would like to lengthen their shower time. Actually, it is likely that more water is wasted since they just stream down along the body without contributing to any useful cleaning. The author just considered the amount of water supply at a certain period of time, but failed to take into account the lengthened time for showering, which determines the whole consumption of water together with the water force.

Besides, more complaints are about to be presented if all the 20 floors are restricted on water flow. As in the letter, a few complaints about water pressure have already been mentioned. It is entirely possible that, after the further adjustment on all the 20 floors, no water could reach the several top floors because the water pressure is too low. It is even more horrible if the water stop when you are taking a shower. I have experience of wrapped with soap bubble but have no water to wash them off. Therefore I take showers as quickly as I can, in order to avoid being caught in that situation again. We can certainly imagine a picture of people expecting for water on the high-rise but no one could save him until other people calls the property office. All these problems could charge the Sunnyside Corporation more money to deal with the tenements’ complaints. Granted, cutting down the unreasonable cost is necessary, but if it causes new problems, which could bring extra expense, we should think twice before taking action.

The author was so optimistic that he or she neglected some possible problems along with the adjustment of showerheads. And also he or she was too hasty to claim that the restricted water flaw on the first five floors would bring more profits. These two major mistakes failed the author to provide a proper recommendation.
