TOPIC: ARGUMENT6 - The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.
"A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money."

In this proposal, the developers suggest that a jazz music club should be established in Monroe so they can make money out of it. They think that the club will have a local market because jazz is very popular in Monroe; a large number of people attended the jazz festival last year; several famous jazz musicians live here, and "Jazz Nightly" is the highest- rated radion programe. Finally, to support their point of view, they quoted a nation wide study and made a conclusion that the proposed club will meke money. But the argument contains some important unconvincing assumptions and is therefore unpersuasive.
Firstly, the arguments assumes that jazz has a market in Monroe. To support this assumption the developers point out that jazz is extremely popular there, and this is infered by some phenomenons. One is that over 100,000 people went to Monroe’s jazz festival last year, so the argument automatically contribute this to the favor of jazz. However, this might not be the case. Perhaps people attented the festival as a way of relaxing and having fun with friends, or perhaps they participate it because there are guest stars on the festival, who attracts more people than jazz fans. Without rulling out the posibilities why people attanted the jazz festival, the arguers can not surely say people went there were all jazz fans. Another is that the argument assumes that the highest- rated radion program is a symbol of the popularity of jazz. While the arguers obviously ignore some other reasons. For example, the honor of the highest- rated programme may not be voted by people litsen jazz in Monroe but by the critics or professionals of music program. The arguers overlook the situation in Monroe, not considering the real condition of the market there.
Additionally, even assuming jazz is indeed popular in Monroe and a market exists, the argument fails to convince me that the C Note will make money from it. The argument claims the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away and assumes people will not go there. So the C Note will have the local market. However, there is other cases. For instance, the jazz fans would love to go the far- away club because the performances there is superior than the C Note or the atmospher is better than the C Note, and by driving car it is not that far for them. Another possibilty is that jazz fans in Monroe may not go to the C Note, perhaps they would rather listen to jazz at home with friends than spending money in the club. In short, without rulling out the other reasons why people would go to the C Note. Otherwise, the arguers can not convince me that the club should be built.
Finally, to further support the suggestion that the club should open, the arguers cites the nationwide study that the typical jazz fan spends about $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. However, the argument applies a nationwide study to a local case. Yet, the local case might not be like this. Even though we assume this study is helpful to the situation here, there are many other possible reasons. Maybe jazz fans in Monroe probably spend money on the jazz ablums or on jazz concerts, while a small part of it on the club, thus the profit of the C Note would not be as good as the developers thought
In sum, the developers’ proposal is not well supported. To bolster it, the arguers must provide more evidence why the club should open, such as the real situation of the local market, the willingness people want to go to the club, as well as the information of potential competitors. Only after all these analyses can a conclusion be made whether the C Note should open or not. |
