The 2009 Noel Prize in physiology and medicine goes to Harvard’s JS, Johns Hopkins’s CG and EB in the UC San Francisco, for their work on how (chromosomes['krəuməsəum]染色体) are protected by (telomeres ['teləmiə]端粒) and the (enzyme ['enzaim] telomerase 末端酶). The Noble (Laureate  ['lɔ:riit]月桂叶，桂冠) research (helped) explain how an organism’s DNA is successfully copied when cells divide. Telomeres are genetic sequences(序列) that act like a little protective cap in the end of the chromosomes—think of (the sealed tips of your shoelaces.) Telomerase is the enzyme that builds telomeres. B and J determined that with specific DNA sequence in the telomeres that kept chromosome from (fraying磨损) whenever they were copied when the cells split in two. B and G discovered telomerase. The finding has implications(暗示，含义) for understanding of the agent in (aging and) cancer. Because if the enzyme keeps the telomeres robust, the chromosome stay protected and the cells aging is slowed. And in cancer cells, which unfortunately do not seem to age, telomeres lines(length) is maintained virtually indefinitely. G,G and B (thus reveals one of) a life’s basic( mechanism ['mekənizəm]), and (paved铺路) a way for new medical strategies.
