185"Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
Scandals are commonly regarded as the most valuable subjects by today's news agencies. As a result, we--the consumers of news--are unprecedentedly exposed to coverage on political, academic, entertaining or sporting scandals. someone argues that these scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Their statement is plausible in some sense. However, scandals in reality are often discovered for catering to the public unlimited curiosities to celeberities' private life, which usually hampers the exposure of real problems in society. 开头就开门见山 很好哦
Let's get down to fundamentals to say that the most powerful news institutions are commercial enterprises, such as CNN, Fox News, ABC and etc.. According to the market theory, their main function is to satisfy their consumers' demands. And the public normally have the insatisable(unsatisfiable) curiosities to the private life of stars--whether in politics, academics, or other areas. Scandals, then, are sold by the news agencies to meet the public needs, which explains why scandals are mostly placed in the front page of newspapers, magazines or exclusively reported in TV channels. Then we can conclude that the purpose of news agency to expose scandals are not for focusing people's attention on social problems--they just want to make money, and the goals of the public to 'buy' these scandals are not for expressing their concerns in problems of our society--they are just curious of private life of those public figures. 讲的是scandal的来源和本质吧 蛮好的
From the analysis above , we may easily understand why scandals usually hamper the exposure of real problems in society. Since news agencies care more money than social problems, and the public focus their attention more on stars' private life than the the displayed social problems behind scandals, they are both inclined to ignore the real problems hidden in scandals. Besides, the coverage of news institutions is limited, and the sections of highlights are even more scarce. Hence when scandals occupy the spotlights, the news to report real social problems will be put off from the publications, or carelessly placed in the 'corner' of certain issues. Meanwhile, the public attention to news information is also bounded. Thus when their attention is replete with the coverage of scandals, the real problems in society may not capture their any interests.
Someone may argue that: don't you know that the exposure to the scandal of Enron plays a critical role in improving the authenticity of companies' financial information in the stock market? Yes, I know. But I concede that case is just a byproduct of scandal production. Based on the analysis above, we know that the purpose of scandal production is not for focusing our attention on problems--news agencies sell them for making money and the public buy them for their curiosities to the public figures' privacy. And when we ponder upon the scandals exposed by news institutions, how many of them do act as the role in discovering problems like the scandal in Enron? The sex scandal of president Bill Clinton did?(是个句子么?) No. The sporting scandal of Olympic champion Jones did? No. Most scandals are just discovered to pander to the public limitless curiosity towards celeberties' private life. Then how can we conclude that scandals focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could?
To sum up, scandals may be one of the key words in our times. The public have a maria(嘛意思?) for scandals. News agencies discovered the demand, then 'produce' scandals to attract them. This mechanism in the production of scandals usually encumbers the exposure of real problems to the public. Only after the public realize their unhealthy curiosity, try their best to restrain it, and earnestly pay their attention to the social problems, and only after the news agencies take the responsibility to discover these problems, can these reports, exclusive coverages, programs and etc. focus people's attention on problems that no speaker or reformer ever could.
