I agree in part(partly agree 这样写我觉得更地道)with the notion that modern universities should take an active role in preparing students with adequate knowledge outside their own field of study, to accommodate(accmmondate)
the great velocity of development of the society, scientific research and globolization(globalization), albeit maintaining sufficient focus on the students’ own disciplines is also required.
Since the industrial revolution, human knowledge in various fields, especially during the scientific exploration, has exploded in(at) a light speed. It is getting more and more difficult for modern students to become a generalist as our ancestors did in the 17th century. Most great names we hear from then were literati in a much more general scope than modern ones. Consider Linnaeus, the founder of biological binominal nomenclature system, whose research field ranged from plants to animals who compiled 10 editions of the book Systema Naturae, describing thousands of species from Plantae to Animalia.(例子写得很厉害,考场上要是能这么写,我觉得阅卷人也不会仔细看,只会觉得很厉害 哈哈) Nevertheless, these descriptions are too brief to suffice as original descriptions in the modern standard. Thanking to the emergence of more sophisticated aparati and techniques such as the electronic microscope and PCR, taxonomists nowadays can discriminate very similar sister taxa with more confidence. Compared with Linnaeus, modern researchers have much narrower focus. It’s unpreventable however, due the vast amount of literatures
already available.(句子结构有问题) As a result, modern students should be first allowed enough time to study their own discipline.
When people are overwhelmed by information overload and over-focus of study, it is natural that specialists from different fields can hardly communicate effectively, not to mention cooperation. In fact, during the thesis defence of the undergraduates of my major, there were five experienced judges selected from various subdisciplines of biology. Usually, only one or two judges can question a paper very professionally, while others left somewhat confused by the detail of the paper – not because they are uncapable as researchers, but because of the overspecialization of many fields in biology nowadays. It seems that meaningful interchange of ideas can only happen within a small circle in today’s world. Letting (let)students acquaint knowledge in other fields would at least let(make) them understand better when they encounter interdisciplinary conversations, and at least they know where to look for more information in case they need to.(这句话虽然写的很复杂,但是句子结构有点混乱,at least重复出现 可以用 at the minimum or in any case 代替)
As a student majoring in natural science, I also realize education in humanity subjects such as arts, languages, culture and history assists me to become truely educated. It’s not to say that one can show off his bel canto skills amongst his lab peers, but education in these fields can change one’s personality and ability of obtaining information. Many great scientists are great musicians or hobbyists in music themselves. It’s hard to explain but often times (?)music can offer marvelous inspiration that other things cannot. A person who is well educated in music is likely to be more chivalrous and polite, which in fact improves his image amongst workers. Another example is that acquaintance of foreign languages and cultures may help to understand more literatures and establish cooperation bonds with researchers in other countries. It is essential since the era of earth village has arrived, and no worker in one field is really isolated.
To sum up, sufficient effort still needs to be made to maintain the competivity(competition?) within a focused field, while knowledge in other academic disciplines, especially the humanities disciplines can bless one with great likelihood of success.
