BEES CAN RECOGNIZE HUMAN FACES

Bees' bread and butter is flowers. There's no reason that they should be able to recognize human's faces. But they can. Back in 2005, Arian Dyer at Monash Univ. showed that bees could identify people who (they) associated with sugary snacks. But could they recognize humans or did they just see them as (weird) flowers.

M(artin Giurfa at France’s Université de Toulouse) contacted D(yer to) work out(on that) question. 1st, (they drew) simple images as facial features, (dots) for eyes, slashes (for nose and mouth), the bees were trained to distinguish between (an) image (with) narrow(er) features and one with wider ones. Then the scientists asked could (the) insects (distinguish facelike) features from nonfaces. The bees (won sugary) rewards when they pick up faces as post(opposed to) pictures that just randomize(had random dots and dashes). Finally, they automatic test(the critters faced their ultimate task:) to pick up(out) real faces (from those that had the) features scrambled. End(And): score. Bees could (indeed) differentiate faces from non faces.

The study was published in the Journal (of) experimental Biology. Scientists hope that (the) simple bee brain could be modeled (a model for automated) facial recognition, which could help in FBI stings.

ANCIENT EAST ASIAN FOUND IN ROMAN EMPIRE

Some people would like to tell their(of Italian) ancestry, like me, and(/) might have a surpise in (the) family tree. A man of east Asian (descent) who was living and working at 2000 years ago in a bonedox of  box(the boondocks near the heel of the Italian boot). The discovery was the 1st good evidence serving(of an) Asian living in Italy during Roman times.

Researchers found this(his) body on the(an) imperial Roman state(estate and took) dental samples. Why examine teeth? Well while(the water) u drink (at) birth (leaves a) distinct signature in (your) teeth. That water signature is in (the) form of oxygen isotopes, Atoms of oxygen of(with) different numbers new trance(of neutrons). Isotopes say sth about the latitude and elevation of ur birth place, which in the case of (our) mystery man definitely wasn't thorough needlly(southern Italy).

Then the researchers test these mighty controll of(his mitochondrial) DNA, which is passed on to(down through) your maternal lineage. And this fellow had eastern(east) Asian genes. The finding appears in the Journal of Roman Archaeology.

It's impossible to say of attract(if the man trekked) to Italian himself or one of these(his) ancestors did. But it's clear that the(this) 1st known Roman Asian wasn't summerized risk diplomatic(some aristocratic diplomat). He was just a poor worker, bearing(buried) with (a) single pie(pot).

WOLVERINE NO MATCH FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

Forget polarbears and pinwinds(or penguins). The cares make(charismatic megafauna) suffering most (from) climate change may well be the wolverine which is predictably(-a vicious predator) known for its canine(uncanny) strength and intenacity. Making this(it the perfect) inspiration for the excessment(X-men) superhero.

The actual wolverine's superpowers in stand(extend) mostly to (a) tolerance to(for) Arctic chill and supersized feet to permit quicker movement on snow. Those big feet might be herding in the larges numbers of without(hurting the largest member of the weasel) family (as) snowpack declines across much of the(/) North America. While(Wildlife) biologists report in the Journal of(/) Population Ecology that foot(fur) trappers incur(have caught) fewer wolferines of(over) the last decades of the 20th centry. That coincides with snowpack declining across Canada everywhere except the Yukon during the same period.

Unfortunately, for the wolverine which is (already) endangered, action to come back(combat the) climate change (behind this) has been slow. The government in(of the) Great White North (has) most recently repeated it(repudiated) its previous commitment to cut green(house) gas emissions as a key way of(under the Kyoto) protocal in favor of (a) slight rise was(as) part of the sound in(signing up to the) Copenhagen accord. While 55 countries did commit action to react the(via that) accord. Their committments for(fall) well shy was(of what's) needed to slowing(slow or even) reverse global warming.

That probaly means less snow for the wolverine, which may mean less food and fewer chances to disperse to new homes. As a result, the mighty wolverine appears to be among the 1st confirmed victims of the(a) changing climate.

GENETIC DOPING NEXT ATHLETIC CHEAT

The Vancouver Olympics begin at(/) February 12th and scientists O Hylar(r on high alert), not just for well known ways to gain the advantages, like stereotypes(steroids) or blood doping. The researchers were(r) also worried about what's called genetic doping. It's the latest in a lead to(elite) atheletic cheating.

Researches wringing in the Journal Science point to a few different types of gene therapy that could get highjack for athletics in stead of medical uses like (the) treatment into(of) obesity, diabetes or muscle diseases. E.G., genes for insolent alike(insulin-like) grow(th) factor could enhance muscle mice(mass). And molecules can(that) regulate the special(expression) of genes may make athletes more energy efficient, or help create more slow twitched muscle fibres.

It's known that in the past few years, a coach in Germany and (a) lab in China have tried to get these kind(s) of therapies into enhance the(the hands of) competitors. So the scientific community wants to get ahead of this by figuring out what molecular signatures might be left in cheaters' bodies after genetic doping.

The researchers do point out that this treatment has(have) so far only be(en) able to produce "faster or stronger mice". But that doesn't mean sb getting (an) Olympic medal isn't a rat.

OXYTOCIN MAY ALLEVIATE SOME AUTISM

Some call it the hormone of life(love). In the(It's) Oxytocin, and it helps moms bond with (and) breast-feed the(ir) babies, and even keeps your romantic couples content. Now a study suggests that the(this) same hormone might also help people with Autism by improving their social awareness. The work is in the proceeding of (the) National Academy of Sciences.

People with Autism will(or) with high function in(-functioning) Autism Spectrum Disorders like Asperger Syndrome, have difficulty engaging in social situations. They really(rarely) initiate social encounters and often have trouble in(even) meeting sb's eyes. They also have low levels of Oxytocin. Now, given this hormones('s) a(/) reputation as a kind of losing(cuddle-inducing) chemicals, scientists got to wondering whether people with Autism might benifit by taking it.

To find out, the research(ers) gave Oxytocin to 13 patients with high function(ing) Autism. And then monitor(ed) their attendness(attentiveness) to social cues. They found that the subjects on Oxytocin were more likely to make eye contact when viewing pictures in(of) faces. And they reported feeling connected with(to) players who were nice the(to them in a) virtual ball tolls(toss) game. Its(These) results suggest that people with Autism do have heating(hidden) social skills. They just need a little hormonal help to express them.

KING TUT'S TOUGH LIFE

The journal of the American Medical Association doesn't usually report all tough(autopsy) results, but they make assumption(an exception) this week for king Tut. The study of the boy king involved DNA and else(analysis and) CAT scans.

Researchers use (genetic) finger-prints from tight(Tut) and ten presumed relatives to map outmost(out his most) accurate 5 generations family tree to date. It reveals that the(a) family history of clubfoot in glilsiy in(and scoliosis). (And) cat scans of Tut turned up foot dephormities(deformities) like (a) missing of toe bone and bone crosses(necrosis), which means some of the foot bones would(were) dying due to a part(poor) blood circulation. Previous scans identify female(had identified a femur) fracture.

The test also found DNA from plasmodial for sypera(Plasmodium Falciparum), meaning when(that the) teenagers (and his great-) grandparents had malarian infections. It's the oldest genetic proof from(for) malaria in wild(well-dated) mummies. DNA (also shows that Tut) was probably (spared bubonic plague, tuberculosis, leprosy or leishmaniasis).

So here's the scenario (the) researchers propose. And(: an) aready frail felt the humbling(pharaoh, hobbling) around and escape(on his cane,) brace and(breaks his) neck, maybe (in a fall.), through out(Throw in that) malaria infection, and around 1324BC, just 9 years after taking the throne, king Tut (was) history.

MURCHISON METEORITE'S CHEMICAL BONANZA

The famous Murchison meteorite smashed into (the) Australian ground in 1969. Researchers then discovered that the space rocks r containing many organic chemicals, including amino acid, the building blocks of proteins. But a new study says that by focusing on the organic molecules by which life on Earth might be(have been) jump started, those scientists miss(ed) possibly millions of other cosmic compounds.

Using high resolution structural spectrum capacity(spectroscopy), (a) Euronpean research teams prove rather(has probed the errant rock) further and found there were(more than) 14,000 basic combinations in(of) molecules. They estimate (that) those compounds indicate that millions of different chemicals are present in (the) meteorites. And that suggests the extra trace of verse(extraterrestrial diversity of) molecules far greater than the chemicals make up of the Earth. The report is in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

According to the study, the murchison meteorite is possibly older than our sun, and picked up (its) chemical heat helium(hitchhickers) in (the) solar system efficiency as the past 2 primary('s infancy as it passed through primordial) clouds. By further analyzing the meteorite, researchers hoped to understand the(its) chemical evolution and creat (a) timeline of chemistry of our univers.

FINCHES SEEK OUT SICK DINING COMPANIIONS

When u r looking for a table in a crowded cafeteria, u probably get wide birds(give wide berth) to the family or get(that sounds like it's) sharing a big dish of whooping cough. Well, now feel(not if u r) house finch, particularly a male, because a study in the Journal Biology Letters shows that male finches actually preferred feeding their(near) males who are visibly ill.

Finches don't get whooping cough, but they are all(\) susceptible to infection with sth called (Mycoplasma Gallisepticum) about they(a bug that) leaves (them) lethargic (and) sporting the(a) bad case of (conjunctivitis), otherwise is pinguy(known as pinkeye). The disease is quite contagious, and can be passed from one finch to another while dining beak-to-beak, or(All) the moris(more reasons, you'd) think for healthy birds to avoid sitting next to someone with crisised(crusty) red pupils(peepers). Yet male house finches, when given a choice, upto(opt to) break breath from(breadcrumbs) with males (who r) obviously under the weather.

Whereas(Why risk) catching a nasty infection when (all) you really wanna catch a quick bite, because males infected with (Mycoplasma) tend to be less agressive. So eating in(with) the infirm means you'r more likely to wonder(wind) up with sitting(seed in) your beak that's bigger(than a beak in) your eye.

FIGHTING CRIME WITH MATH

Sometimes, predicting human behavior doesn't depend on understanding our psychology. Researchers at the annual meeting of the American Association from(for) the Advance(ment) of Science, today presented a mathematical model that predicts the likelyhood that a police falls at conquering(force can conquer) either a new drug market or end a rush(rash) of burglary.

Treating criminal behaviors to determine criminal(as a deterministic) system, they created quisions(equations,) based on data from the Los Angeles police department, that described the movement of neighborhood crime and how cops might better control the primary(crime rate). All the models produce 2 types of so-called criminal hotspots, which r mathematically referred to as super-critical which is an unstable system, and sub-critical which is a stable system.

Now a sub-critical hotspot, which could be sth like enlarged(a large) neighborhood drug market, can be effectively supressed according to the model. Because this sort of hotspot requires complex organization, and it's not easily really(re-) established even after police pressure was(is) relaxed. But (a) strong police presents(presence) in these super-critical hotspots doesn't provide a lasting solution. Here the crime hotspot seemingly(simply) pops up in the(a) nearby area. Think of thieves moving through densely packed homes and quickly able to establish new targets outside happenly(heavily) policed area.

But the model's predictions about hotspot displacement have not been observed in a(\) real life. So, while the scientists (r) so talking to the IPD(with the LAPD), there 're no plans yet to alter police tragedy.

IMMIGRANT DUST FEEDS RAIN FOREST

It's long been known that new tree which does(nutrient-rich dust) from Africa floats across the Atlantic to the (Amazon). And it's assumed that the dust fertilizes the rain forest. (Oliver Chadwick) from the Univ of California, S.B., says that Hawaii can also thank immigrant dust for its lush forests.

"Hawaii is one of the least dusty places in the world. It's one of the most remote archepoladars(archipelagos) in the world and receives very little dusts. And yet we have been able to demonstrate that the fosferas(phosphorus) that's carried by the dust and deposited on the old landscapes. And(in) Hawaii actually fertilizes the forest."

Speaking Feb. 19th at the annual meeting of American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Diego, Chadwick recognize(noted) that Puerto Rico also relies on African dust for fertiliaztion. "Through the atmosphere, all parts of terrestrial leak(eco) systems, for(forests,) grass lands are linked in a very effective way."
