EXPEDITION FINDS WORLD WAR 2 NAVY WRECK

The National Oceanic (and) Atmospheric Administrations spends most of its time to try(trying) to understand and predict changes in the environment, along with conserving a managy(and managing) coastal (and) marine resources. But its scientific expertises also just make(made) it possible to look(locate) the remains that the(of the) US may be trolled boats(Navy Patrol boat) some(sunk) by a Germany sumary near the(submarine in) WW2ed.

The ship is the YP389 which went down about 20 miles of(f) the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on June 19th, 1942. Six sailors were killed in the attack. The wreck is found (in) 300 feet water, in the(a) area called Gravy art(Graveyard) of the Atlantic. That region is the final resting place for more than 80 American, British and German vessels lost in the battle of the Atlantic.

The discovery was made during (the) summer archaeological expedition to research an(and) document to destroy(historically) significant WW2ed ship breaks(shipwrecks). The remains were(will be) surveyed by(\) photograph(ed) and document(ed) none vasively(non-invasively,) as (the) lost boats and ships (r) considered war graves. The researchers were(will) also serving(surveyed) the marine life that is(has) found a home of mongamom(among the ruins).

PREHISTORIC HUMAN FASHION FIBRES FOUND

We humans love to decorate things. We wear flashing(flashy) clothes, tie ribbons to suitcases and personal as(personalize) the cases for our iphones. And apparently we have these tendencies(had this tendency) for a long long time. More than 34000 years to be exact.

Harved researchers, together with Israeli and Georgin(Georgian) Scientists recently discovered the oldest known fibres used by humans in the(a) cave by the photails(foothills) of George(ia) Caucasus Mountains. The researchers were(n't) searching for thread. They were looking for tree pollen samples that will(would) reveal how the(\) environmental and temperature fluctuations influence on(influenced) people's lives. But they knew that(they'd found) sth. has started(historic) when they saw color(the colored) thread.

The fibres were made from wild flax. Some were twisted indicated(indicating) rope, while others were not(knotted). They might be(have been) used to sew pieces of clothing to keep these ancient people warm. Or maybe tighted(tied) together packs that what allowed a(would allow) group to be more mobile. These strings could also observed as dishandled first term(have served as handles for stone) tools. The fibres were colored blank, grey, t(turquoise) and pink. So in addition, (to) cave pintings(paintings) we now have evidence of cave fashion, the first tentative steps on the way to cave of evoke(the cover of Vogue).

TREE ELECTRICITY TUNS NANO-GADGET

If scientists have their way, we may something may tapping mapples, not for pancake fences, but for power. Because researchers in the Univ. of Washington in Seattle have found another electricity in trees to run electronic in circuit. If u made a potato battery, u know the planned material can generate current. But the energy in trees is sth. else entirely. The potato eperiment use electric tool of 2 different medals to set up a charge difference get electrods on flowing.

But in a current study, researchers used trods with the same material. Sticking one electrode into tree, and another in the soil. And they found big leap maple generate a steady bolt up to a few hundred MELIBOLS. That's way in less that bolt in a half provided by stardard w battery.

So the scientist design the gadget was so small with parts just hundred meters in size. But u can on tree power alone. The results appeared in the I-tri transactions on nana-technology. If u r nuts for a renewable energy, u probably can much greener than f tree.

CLIMATE FORECAST FOR ALL

GW will(would) transform large swaths of Africa: shifting rains, breating(spreading) malaria, even changing the size of the Sahara desert. Yet, the bulk of world's climate forecasting can be concentrating(has been concentrated) on those regions that host the supercomputers that can do it: the US, Europe, ant the rest of the (developed) world.

That's set to change(.) Meeting just for the 3rd times in(time since) 1979, the World Climate Conference established primary work(a framework) last week for extending science basis(based) climate predictions to all, since(Think) the weather Forecast only bigger. This conference is famous forum(for,) among other things, creating (an) international pattern(Panel) on climate changes. The(, whose) reports have won(warned) the world the(of) acceleratiing GW. The goal of this new conference(framework is) to bettering able(better enable) all countries to adapt to that future climate.

Too and adapt(To that end,) the cultures expanding(it calls for expanded) observations of (the) global climate, public climate adapter(access to climate data), more climate prediction researches and (a) new climate service(s) information system. This will provide local governments with expect to(expected) changes on(to) water resources, agriculture, fisheries, forests, even health.

Of course, kind of(climate) predictions (will) also guide as(\) adaptation to warming(warmer) globe, and even potentially provide early warnings for national disasters. But they won't be anything near perfect. As Robert Heinlein said, 'Climate is what u expect, weather is what u get.'

If u've (ever) been to a hairdresser, chances r u('v) finding(found) yourself scrambling for things to talk about is(as) ur loxer explict what(locks are expertly coiffed). What(One) common to order(topic of) discussion at least (for) old(er) Americans, is their health, which leads social scientists can(to) conclude that hair style could make(hairstylists may be) unique position to encourage the clients to seek medical attention.

Keith Anderson, a professor of social work in(at the) Ohio state Univ. started to study seniors' relationship with (their) stylists after hearing such sessions fulfil 2s So Want(referred to as Salon) Therapy. He conducted a survey of hairdress of new on(near the) campus and found that clients often on burden(unburden) themselves to stylists who offer sympathetic ill(ear) along with treatment(trim and) highlights. More than 80% of Solon work(er) surveyed said that the old(their older) clients share the(their) problems during the appointments. Results published in the Journal of Applied Gerontology.

The problem of course, is that hairdressers arn't quick(equiped) to offer medical advice. GENE THERAPY CURES COLOR-BLIND MONKEYS

Now, here are(is) sth. we(u) don't c everyday. Scientists cure color blind monkeys. According to a report published online in the Journal Nature, researchers of use(have used) gene therapy to allow color blind squirrel monkeys to look at their food(fruit) in a whole new like(light). In one type of squirrel monkey, the males like(lack a) visual pigment called L-opsin, its absence (renders) the monkey's color blind, unable to distinguish reds and greens. Most the females on the other hand, see and(in) full color. So the scientists got to wondering what would happen if they give(gave) a boy squirrel monkey the same up as the(opsin that) girls have.

Using a harmless virus, the scientists introduced the pigment gene into the eyes of color blind adults. Learned by Haud(Lo and behold,) about a month later, the monkeys with the new L-opsin gene will be(were) able to c the(\) hues that(\) they('d) never seen before. The research doesn't mean we'll soon be trying the same thing in humans because what(we're) not yet ready the(to) monkey with (our) own selves that way. But the fact, the(that a) fellow primate was able to make and use the new pigments, even though they received the genes in(as) adults, was a real eye ball(eye-opener).

SALTY ORIGINS FOR EARLY EARTH BIOMOLECULES

The early earth's oceans were home to a lot of interesting chemistry. Now scientists (have) found that a meaningful assets(amino acid) thought to be present win(way) back wind(when) could be included(have been cooked) into other compounds vital for life. And idea u should take with the(a) grain of salt.

4b years ago, the planet was probably covered by (a) salty ocean dotted with volcanic islands that are shorter than(and short lived) continents. Germen researchers recently mimicked some of the chemistry taking place along the coasts of the volcanic islands. They created in(\) an approximation of primordial sea water, then they that bring(evaporated) it(,) to simulate what will dominate these(went on at those) volcanic coasts. The biggest(baked the) residue creating salt crests(crusts). And this(those) high tempretures, amenial assence(amino acid) interact(ed) with metal ions in the salt crests(crusts), and were converted into other important biological molecules, such as (pyrroles), which is a(are) part of the structures of coral filling(chlorophyll in) plants and globling(hemoglobin in) animals. The scientists presented their findings in(\) Sep. 17 at the yearly primatory(European Planetary) Science Conference in Pakistan(Potsdam).

Over a(\) 100s of thansands (of) years, these novel compounds could build upon(have built up along) the volcanic coasts(,) creating materials for the first living cells, which were really worth their salt.

MINI T. REX RECOVERED

Asking any young dinosaur phonic(fanatic) about the mighty Tyrannossaurus rex and (we'll) probably get (a) fairly accurate description: huge reptile, big head, powerful jaw, high(tiny) little arms. Scientists had thought the dino(that the) animal evolved its bizzare proportions as group(it grew to its gargantuan) stature. But in this week's issue of the journal Science, paleontologist Pall Sereno discribes a newly discovered miniature tyrannosaurid that evolved millions of years earlier and has all the attributes of the larger one.

The tiny dinosaur had been excavated in Mongolia illegally insult(and sold) to (a) private collector. He contacted Sereno to evaluate the preserve(d) tyrannosaurid. Sereno agreed to do so if the dinosaur was donated to science, and eventually returned to China.

The dinosaur is about 9 feet long and it has(had) estimated weight of only 150 pounds, but it's all there: the tiny arms, the huge head, the large teeth, the(and) muscular jaw. 125 million years later, that animal(')s descendant(s) has bloomed(had ballooned) into (an) almost exact replica more than 90 times larger. Sereno and (his) collegues said(say) that the body plan mustn't be(must have been) a successful structure for hunting prey, and automatically throwing(ultimately thrilling) dinosaur levels(lovers) everywhere.

HOW TO STOP THE ONGOING LOSS OF SPECIES

Species of plants, animals, and other categories of living things r disappearing. (And) Millions of people still live in an(\) extreme poverty. But is there (a) collection? EG, is the ongoing destruction of the indonesian rain forest driven by economical development of the(\) Indonesians, or (is) the global domain what(demand for wood) products to plan(blame?). Is it a combination, or (are there) other factors that r more important(?) The bad news is that answer is unclear, and the worse news is that the world's countries have not lived up to the pledge of conventional(under the convention on) biological diversity to reduce the rate of species lost(loss) by 2010.

One reason for that failure, no one is agree(has agreed) on what (are) true indicators with(of whether) biodiversity (is) being preserved or lost. So argues that will pull the(Matt Walpol of the) UN Envrionment Programme in this week's issue of the journal Science. There's a lack of good data for(from) the front lines of the biodiversity crisis, and even good data does existent foreign(doesn't extend for enough) back in(to) its time to make good justments possible.

What is clear is that approaches look(an approach that looks at both) biodiversity in(and) poverty is going to be needed. To give just one example looking after(of how) the 2 can work together, producing more crops per egg(acre) can both help poor farmers and preserve the(\) existing forest. Economists in(and) Scientific American calm(columnist) Jeffrey Sachs (argues) in the same issue in(of) science, that (a) new global treaty adressing biodiversity is needed. One of the siblicity the(that is pared explicitly to) poverty alleviation. So that's the challenge had(ahead): providing for the 9 billion humans expected to be alive in 2050, without destroying the world's millions(remaining) wildlife.

LISTENING WHILE DRIVING IS, WHAT'D YA SAY?

We all know that talking on our(a cell) phone can impair our ability to drive. Although too many of us do this that way(it anyway). Now a study in the Journal Psychonomic Bullitin in(and) Review, shows (that the) reverse is also true: Driving makes it hard to keep track of what we r talking about.

Previouse studies (had) found that motorists (r able to) converse just fine, but to Gary Dell (of) the university of Illinois that fining just did(n't) make sense, because comperhending speech requires attention, as does during family's dam(steering the family sedan). So Dell (did a) study in driving simulator.

96 participants were paired up, with one take the will(taking the wheel) while the other take(sat in) the passenger seat or talk(ed) to the driver on (a) hands-free phone. Each participant listened to and was asked to repeat a handful of stories, and then to remember the(them after) getting (out of) the car. As u can imagine, the drivers had a tougher time to recall(recalling) the details as(than) the passengers. And the(ir) conversational skills, to the biggest knows try(took the biggest nosedive while they were trying) to navigate intersection (or) handle traffic.

Next, maybe the scientists (will) determine whether the(/) driving also impairs our ability to (sing,) eat breakfast or even(and) put on a makeup, of course, text.

PLANTS PUT THE BEND IN RIVERS

When was around the bend in river(s) hundreds of millions of years ago? It's a trick question, because there weren't any bends. Intric(Ancient) rivers were typically just wide, sheetlike flows (of) water. New reports in (the) Journals Geology (and Earth) Science Reviews think(say we can thank the) very 1st land loving(landlubbing) plants for putting their(the) turn in the river.

Researchers from Dalhousie Univ. there is(examined) dozens of sides(sites) from the channel islands of(off) France to death valley. They said it is(say that) well before dinosaur or really, much of anything from(roamed) the earth which is in the river is(rivers were just) vast expanses of waters hitting(heeding) on the(only) gravity and heading straight to sea.

The first vascular plants to vanage bottom of(took advantage of the abundant) water, (and) put down the(/) roots. The roots become the whole sediment the(began to hold the sediment in) place. Does(Thus) the river(bank) was born. (And) Waterways begin(began) infinite(to get thinner and) more define. The communities (of Paleozoic) plants congregated at the water's edge (and began to) conolize their(the Earth's) surface.

Of(Over) the next 50m years, this co-evolution of floor(flora) or flow that's(leds) the (meandering) rivers we know today. And the bare(a barren) landscape made lush and also the 7$ told(toll to) across (the Hudson on the George Washington) bridge.

FORCING ELECTRONS INTO SUPERCONDUCTING LINE

Imagine a world with labtating(levitating) cars, amerizing(MRIs) the size of lab tops(laptops) and the wides scarely(scale) efficient energy distribution. These might not be pipe dreams of(if) scientists can capitalize on the(a) finding in the Journal Nature.

Superconductors carry electricity with no lost(loss to) resistence. There r too(to) regular conductors with(what a) laser beams meet the(is to a) light bulb. The problem is they have to be cool(ed) to at least -100 degrees celsius to work. Then (the) electrons spontaneously start moving from(in) one direction in(and) forming pairs. And now, scientists have called glims(caught a glimpse of a) mysterious phase they called Pseudo-Gap, With(where the) electrons line up just before they form pairs and starts super conduting.

Louis Taillefer (from the) U. of Sherbrooke, (said) they used the(a) magnetic field to allign the electron flow. "yes, (the effect was) very (big, It was) surprisingly me indeed(big)."

If scientists could take advantage of this effect, room temperature superconductors could be (a) step closer. "If we do arise the(find or if we do arrive at a) material (that) can stay(sustain superconductivity) at the room temperature, we will have true(a huge) technological (r)evolution (, similar on a scale to the transistor)."

SEX DIFFERENCES IN JEALOUSY

Studies from around the world (have) reported that men r much more jealous for(of) sexual infidelity than emotional infidelity. And Women r the opposite: They r more jealous of emotional cheating than sexual cheating. And express(Experts) often lean on (an) evolutionary cause for this: Men can never be sure felt(they r) the baby daddy, and women r most concerned with securing a genuiely lawyer(loyal) father to care for the children.

We r often use(Well, authors of) a recent study in Psychological Science quesiton the string(strength) of the evolutionary just so secret(theory), realizing that there'r men who find emotional cheating far worse than sexual cheating. The study reports that personality patterns, shiped(shaped) by one's relationship history can have (an) impact on jealousy.

For 100(Over 400) participants took service(a survey) to measure the(ir) jealousy type, meaning which trouble is the(troubles them) more: sexual or emotional fidelity. And(Then) they completed the test with(which) specifically measures attachment style (in) relationships with new(those) styles include secure, fearful, preoccupied, or dismissing. And they found that 65% of those who were attornymouse(r autonomous and) tend to be dismissive about commitment reported greater stress about sexual cheating than emotional cheating. And 77% of those who were more securely attached in(and) commited (in) relationships found that emotional (betrayal) to be worse than sexual diplicity(duplicity). Even within each sex without restriking(the results were striking), dismissive women were 4 times more likely to report greater sexual jealousy than securely commited women. And dismissive men were 50 times more like better for secure jealousy than securely commited men.

So the offer is warning(author warn:). Sex differences in jealousy r much more new ones the new(nuanced than an) evolutionary might in applying(explanation might imply).

HAVE WALLET CARDS HELPED FISH?

Americans eat more fishes than ever. (We) Now goblup(gobble up) more than 2 millions tons of seafood a year compared with() just half a million in(at the dawn of the) 20th centry. (And) The Monterey Bay inqury is the(Aquarium released its) 1st seafood wallet card in 2000.

Intended to help seafoodies avoid the worse fish such as tuna in seabest(or Chilean sea bass). Wallet Cards and iphone lap prove left(have proliferated), but happy to be(have they) helped? The answer is no according to a study in Oryx, simply because of(\) the wallet cards r confusing. EG., eventhough the US seem reports(imports) more than 80% of (its) seafood, wallet cards here focusly means unfish from international(focus mainly on fish from our national) fisheries.

Further (adding to the) confusions: different cards make different choices. Atlantic (halibut) is (a) no goal(no-go) for most, but Monterey Bay recommend(s it) as the(a) sustainable choice. After distributing more than 1 million wallet cards, Monterey bay's only(own) research reveals that there(they) have no impact whatsoever. ASEXUAL SOLUTION TO A PARASITE PROBLEM

O(rganisms) evolve(d) with sexual reprodution so they can(could) stay one step (ahead of) parasites. Also they(Or so the theory) goes, but what about the(\) beasties make baby without sex? How do they escape infection? A study in the Journal Science suggests that for Bdelloid Rotifers, the answer is blowing in the wind.

Biologists believe the(that) sex offers (an) evolutionary advantage because it promotes genetic diversity. Coming up with fresh new gene combinations should allow organism to outsmart parasites, which (r) also could(\) continuously evolving. But if it(that theory) is correct, then Bdelloid Rotifers, fresh water and VB(invertebrates that) have(n't) had sex (in) at least 13(30) million years, should parasite(have been parasited) into extinction long ago. Yet here they are, alive and well.

To find out why, scientists infected Rotifers with (a) deadly fungus. And they found that Bdelloid Rotifers can shifted(shaked) the infection by drying out, drifing away and (then) rehydrating once the(y) land someplace moist, but the fungi were free(fungus-free). The fungi don't survive (the) desiccation. So (the) longer than(the Bdelloids) stay dry, the better off they be. So for celebate R(celibate Rotifers) once(want to) stay clean, a good long dry spell is just (what) the doctor ordered.
