TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."

The speaker asserts that any means towards a worthy goal is justifiable. From my point of view, it is Machiavellianism style, which I can hardly agree wtih. Whether a goal is worthy of not is based on the standpoints of people and whether certain means are justifiable are often complicated and many things should be taken into consideration.

I can only concede with the speaker insofar as that we should take great efforts to reach the goal that is worthy. After some many goals of great value attained, our human society then reach its high level of civilization. So many great discoveries and inventions, like computers and cars, have contributed to our better life. Considering the great advancement we got in the past thousands years, it is obvious that the pursuit of science and knowledge is worthy of our efforts. Just for ourselves, no one can deny the rationality of striving for our goals in proper way.

Admittedly, we should make every effort to attain the goal that is of value, but it is ridiculous to claim that any means taken to attain the goal is justifiable.
We have the rights to get better lives through attaining our goals, but there is no right without limitations. We couldn't ignore the fact that some goals worthy for some people are harmful to others so whether the means are justifiable are determined on a case-by-case basis.

On one hand, considering the "individual goals", which meets the beneficial need for only one or a group of people, the justifiable mean to reach them cannot do harm to the welfares of others or ,more broadly, cannot
collide with the rules and laws.
The political leaders should root in mind that what they do won't be illegal when in pursuit of victory of election.
In business, the goal of maximizing the profits and minimizing costs cannot be attained by illegal means or at the cost of social well beings. For example, it is unjustifiable for a company to reduce the expenses and increase profits by polluting the environment.

On the other hand, even if the goal is somehow corresponding the major interest,
the means taken should still be consistent with ends in view. We should weigh the benefits of attaining the goal against the costs it may raise. In the realm of politics, it is of great value to end the gloomy autocracy in some countries, but the rationality of the goal doesn't necessarily justify any means towards the goal, such as overloading sanctions and even wars which will result in the catastrophe in humanism. The war against the Saddam's Iraq is a vivid example of this. When it comes to the environment protection, is it wise of dismiss the entire industries that are mainly responsible for the pollution? Obviously not! So it is essential to take both the benefits and the costs into account when we are determining the justification of the means taken to goals.

In sum, the extreme position of the speaker on the issue misses the points entirely. The justification of means taken to attain the goal that is worthy are based on complicated and overall consideration as discussed above.

The speaker asserts that any means towards a worthy goal is justifiable. From my point of view, it is Machiavellianism style, which I can hardly agree wtih. Whether a goal is worthy of (or) not is based on the standpoints of people and whether certain means are justifiable are often complicated and many things should be taken into consideration.(怎么说呢,第一段是统领全文的,其实这几句话信息量不大。既然是从个人和社会两方面考虑的,就可以把这个观点在首段提出来,这样 具体一点)

(把这句话跟那两个例子位置换一下~~~Just for ourselves, no one can deny the rationality of striving for our goals in proper way.

结构很好,让步以后分了个人和社会两个层面来论述问题。
