185"Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

I agree that in many cases scandals can serve to reveal larger problems that a community or society should address. On the other hand, scandals can sometimes distract us from more important societal issues.

Broadly speaking, it is true that scandals expose some facts that cannot be seen in other ways for the speakers and reformers have to take responsibility for their public affairs. Many political scandals which involve the breaking of the nation's laws or plotting to do so are broken by whistleblowers who reveal wrongdoing within organizations or groups, such as Deep Throat during the 1970s Watergate scandal. This scandal revealed many illegal activities authorized and carried out by Nixon's staff and the immense scope of sabotage, illegal break-ins, improper tax audits, illegal wiretapping on a massive scale and a secret slush fund laundered in Mexico to pay those who conducted these operations. Moreover, the Watergate Scandal also indirectly caused many changes in campaign financing. The scandal became a driving factor in amending the Freedom of Information Act in 1974, as well as laws requiring new financial disclosures by key government officials. Without scandals, it would be very difficult for civilians to know the existence of White House dirty tricks. In this case, democracy and legal system would surely be destroyed.

Sometimes, the scandals make us confused and overemphasize their fault instead of treating their contribution fairly. Sex scandals as a typical example are often associated with celebrity and become scandals largely because of the prominence of the person involved nature of the sexuality, such as relevant report about Michael Jordan's addictive gambling and dissolute life. These scandals lead to a bad reputation of this basketball player regardless great achievement and numerous honors he won in NBA during his career. The mass fail to realize the fact--Although Michael Jordan's moral is not lofty he cannot be counted as demoralization. Unfortunately, it is the instinct of journalists to try their best to find scandals which could increase their sales of newspaper or attract more audience to focus on certain TV talk show. Therefore, staying with these money-grubbers, it is easy for personage to be humiliated.

In addition, we should avoid believing blindly in the reports about these scandals and be careful to establish the facts relating to them before making any judgments. Even if some scandal are one form of expression of free speech and democratic supervision, civilians should
regard them as false before checking them and get a certain result by rigorous attitude.

All in all, scandals as a way to expose delinquent act in order to keep social justice will be beneficial to good of community. In contrast, if scandal is just a product of those who attempt to get more benefits from speculation of private life, it will do harm to society. People should keep their alert to both of these scandals in order to reject to be controlled by others who have ulterior motives.
