TOPIC: ISSUE11 - "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
WORDS: 408 TIME: 00:43:04 DATE: 2009-7-26 10:42:53
Out of a splendid dream, the speaker posited a recommendation of setting up the specialized university, to cultivate the social problem solvers. In my point of view, the attempt was worthwhile, on condition that practical educational system was established in the campus. However, contrary to what the author expected, such education could merely contribute some more outstanding experts to the society, rather than solving all the persistent social problems. In fact, I doubt the establishment of a global university could be the panecea.
An utopia has been haunting around over centuries. Even an ignorant kid would make such splendid wish before blowing out the birthday candles: I wish there to be no wars, no desease, no argument, everyone is equally treated, and so forth. However, if we define the "persistent social problems" as the distance between the contempory society and a utopia, thus the issue becomes clear to us that the distance could not be simply overcame by setting up a global university. Had such organization to be of such effect, there would already been thousands of universities blossoming around the world. In short, the world would not change much on the establishment of such universities.
At the same time, it is also to be doubted that whether the experts could deal with the problems. Fundamentally, universities which enjoy the worldwide household fame already exists, but the top schools where celebrities and heros take birth have not prevent the happening of the disasters in the society. Take an apt illusion would better explain the problem: the collapse of the Babel Tower implies the humans to seperate, to speak different languages, to curse others heresies, to rise the arms and bleed. We can consider this as one of the persistent social problems, while not a single one have the problem solved or even casted a reasonable plan. Contraversies have been around for centries between philosophors and scientists, while the issue escalated and escalated. What`s more, even if the utopia is accessible, it is still a great task to have the students cultivated. On the personal level, the students would never touch the most important factor to deal with the social problems----practical experience. Campus life would not produce excellent social experts.
Overall, the suggestion is based on a hasty wish, which would not conduct the human beings to a more splendid world. The attempt could contribute some elites to the world, while the persistent problems are remained to be solved.
