There is always existing a society controversy that whether laws are just or unjust, and whether every individual should obey the laws or not. In my opinion, the citizens have the responsibility to obey the laws; meanwhile, it is also necessary to amend the laws or even disobey and break them when laws are flawed in some situations.
To begin with, obeying the laws is the essential point to form a stability society. Laws are the rules set up to prescribe the humanity's action, which means laws are the criterion to judge issues whether they are right or wrong. If people resist laws, confusion and unstable atmosphere will surly come into being, which will definitely have a negative effect on society's development.
But, we also should understand that laws do not represent just at any time. Whether a issue is just or unjust is always defined by our common sense. Under these circumstances, although most of our actions defined by laws are applied to our natural morality, there still exist some controversial issues, such as laws about clone and atomic bombs. Some people state that making laws to hold out cloning meaning to improve the techniques, while others claim that clone breaks our morality. Laws can not easily define which side is right by our common sense. So items just and unjust are too simple to be used to categorize the kinds of laws because some laws may not be defined as either just or unjust.
Moreover, laws are mostly a representative of authority's rights, which means they may not stand by the most people's side. As far as I am concerned, laws are rules of conduct or action prescribed or formally recognized as binding or enforced by a controlling authority. It is clearly that laws are representative of the controlling authority's wills. Because of the rights' of authority, laws sometimes even block the correct trend of society's development. Take the geocentric theory as a instance. This theory which is restricted by people's limited knowledge, are set to be laws by pope, because this theory, representing the God's power, can consolidate their authority. But geocentric theory has been testified totally wrong by Copernicus. However, the pope still forces the people to obey the laws to believe geocentric theory. Laws are unjust under these circumstances, so Galileo, Bruno stand out to break the unjust laws.
Finally, it is vital for citizens to distinguish the laws whether they are just or unjust from our own sight, for the laws are being changed all the time by different thoughts. Like the laws about homosexual marriage, how the community recognize this intractable issue is always being changing from different people. Some governments may regard it as a illegal action, while others, especially the nation have numbers of buggers, may take it as a legal action. So what we should do to treat laws need to take the most citizens ideas into account. We can not always believe in the governments laws, for there may be some flaws. We can try to advise the executives to amend the laws to make laws fit for the present. And when the laws can not be adopted, we should break them.
To sum up, to have a stable society, the responsibilities for citizens are not only to obey just laws, but also resist unjust laws. If the laws represented the authority's right can not be recognized by the most, we should amend them, or even break them. |
