110The following appeared in a memo from the Principal of Sherwood Junior High School.

"It appears that the lighting in Sherwood High's classrooms, which have large windows but minimal overhead light sources, is impairing student academic performance and teacher morale. Records show that during December and January, the two months with the fewest hours of daylight, attendance rates fall, average daily class participation drops, and grades decline. Teacher resignations are also highest during these months. According to a study of Tundra Vocational School, which experiences entire seasons with little daylight, students' grade point averages increased when Day Glow light bulbs, which mimic sunlight, were installed in classrooms. This study suggests that Sherwood can improve students' academic performance and teachers' morale by using Day Glow light bulbs in winter."

就算TVS得积极表现与DG有关但不一定SH的情况也可以通过DG来改善


The memo recommends that Sherwood High(SH) should adopt Day Glow(DG)light bulbs in winter to improve students' academic performance and teachers' morale. To substantiate this conclusion the arguer points out that students' and teachers' negative behavior in seasons without enough daylight. Furthermore the arguer cites Tundra Vocational School(TVS) who adopts DG light bulb and have active behavior as example in favor of the conclusion. At first sight this argument appears to be somewhat convincing, but further reflection reveals that it neglect vital concerns that should be addressed and furthermore the argument suffers a few logical flaw.

Lacking persuasive scientific evidence to proof that there is certain relation between less daylight and students' bad academic performance and teacher's lack of morale. The arguer's assumption is not valuable.

Even if less daylight may lead to students' bad academic performance and teacher's lacking of morale. But the aditors assumption that the shorter time of daylight is the only cause of the decline of attendance rates,less daily class participation, drop of grades and even the rise of teachers resignation rates during December and January and is still lack of over all consideration. Perhaps it is the cold weather make the students want to stay at home or the too heavy clothes prevent them from taking class participation moreover the Christmas season attracts their attention from school work and examination. And teachers may like to change a job after a certain period of time December and January may be a good choice .Without ruling off these and other possibilities this argument can not justifiably conclude that less daylight is the only reason which leads to students' bad academic performance and teacher's lacking of morale.

The arguer fails to establish the causal relationship between the fact that the increasing of students' grade in TVH and the claim that TVH adopt DG light bulbs ,This argument is unacceptable unless there is compelling evidence to support the connection between these two event Perhaps, for example the increasing of students' grate results from the improve of teaching method and modern facilities.


Consuming that DG really help increase students' grade in TVH, but would that bring the same result in SH. Maybe students in DG are much naughtier than those in TVH, so because these and those difference exist between TVH and SH, the assumption is unreliable that TVH will benefit from DG.

All in all the author fail to substantiate his conclusion that DG will lead to better behavior among students and higher morale among teachers in SH is not convincing for lacking valid evidence or sound reasoning .So before the principal make up his mind to adopt DG every possible consideration should taken into account.
