Although many people believe that we learn much more from people whose opinions we share than from people whose opinions contradict our own, I doubt whether the argument bears much close examination. Suppose, it were true, we would then become blind men or deaf mutes who have to always keep themselves in a dark room or a vacuum bottle alone in order to prevent from touching any contradict thing黑屋子和真空的瓶子和contradict thing不能构成对比吧?, which in fact is true. I fearlessly deduce that this conclusion would be extinct if we could realize that our world is full of various kinds of contradictions and the contradiction could push the progress procedure of the world.
It has taken a long time to convince the public that we can not only learn from friends but also learn much more from adversaries. One example that aptly illustrates this point involved the war. In order to win a battle, a commander usually will collect various information, either secretive or open, to make his war plan before setting out an attack. Where does the commander get those valuable information? From the enemy, because the commander has his single target----annihilating the enemy. In order to achieve his military goal, he will gather the information such as the weapon equipments, commissariat, the number of the soldiers, and the stratagems the enemy will use. Without doubt, the commander’s adversary also will collect the information from the commander’s side as well. How can we deny that the commander or his opposite party do not learn from each other?
If someone thinks that above example is special one, he maybe can’t neglect the following example that occurs during our daily life. In our modern time, an intensively competitive society, many of us believe that the teamwork is the best and the most worthy model in business enterprises. There would be contradictions among the team members, but it is the contradiction that promotes business. Usually, some team members bring up a business plan, which is used as an target for the rest of team members to shoot. At the end, the whole team often comes out a better scheme plan through this means. It is clear that an excellent business project must be produced through overthrowing and rebuilding from time after time during the group discussion. The contradiction among the group member seems to reduce the efficiency and sometimes bring some unpleasure, but I think that it is a wiser and safer way to observe and judge the world.
We will become subjective also, if we refuse to admit that we surely learn a lot of knowledge from people whose views we share. How can we deal with a river that always deluges in the flood season? Dredge or block up the river? If we only reinforce and raise the river dam for blocking up, the river will become more dangerous, which its riverbed is beyond the horizon because of the mud and silt from the upside river. Maybe we ought to dredge the river bottom, and then the water can flow smoothly. Dredging or blocking up the river is same as whether we accept or reject the person whose views we share or contradict our own. The problem now facing us is: how shall we deal with the people whose views contradict our own?
As is so often point out, the contradiction is a two-edged weapon which can be used equally for good and bad. Above examples confirm an unshakable conclusion that we can not only learn much more from people whose views we share, but also from people whose views contradict our own.
