235．"Most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue. But loyalty—whether to one's friends, to one's school or place of employment, or to any institution—is all too often a destructive rather than a positive force."

The author seems to exaggerate the destructive aspects of the loyalty and the statement above is somewhat lopsided. Actually, whether loyalty can bring us positive or negative effects rely on our attitude towards it, and we should be reasonable to keep moderate loyal.

There is no denying that the unwarranted or undue loyalty such as irrational frenzy at idols can be a destructive force if no control is imposed on it. With excessive loyalty, one might well treat his or her friends, employers blindly and even
violate the laws, social regulations, moral standard, etc. which would result in some crazy behaviors. For instance, someone might probably aid his or her friend to escape from some penalty with the abuse of his or her power; the employee might well help the company make profits at the sacrifice of the interest of the whole society. Moreover, history shows all too well that crossing the fine line between patriotism and irrational jingoism can lead to such atrocities as persecution, genocide, and war. And these things collectively illustrate that our blind loyalty is prone to turn to a destructive force.

However, we should never ignore the benefits of being loyalty, which is essential to both individuals and institutions. As a quality that has been labeled as an important virtue for many years, the loyalty plays a significant role in many aspects such as keeping sound relationships. For the institutions, it is instructive to maintain a stable relationship among persons for it can strengthen their sense of community, thus engender cohesion of its entire people which would make the group powerful. After the Second World War, for example, the resurgent of Germany surprised everyone by its quick recovery after total defeat. However, it is the German’s loyalty to their country that make them work together to build such a mighty modern country from the ashes in a short period of time, in spite of the unimaginable difficulties such as economic sanctions from the Allies. Thus the loyalty is indispensable as a vital virtue and we can never belittle the advantages it might bring.

In conclusion, loyalty should be treated prudently in order to avoid any harmful effect. While loyalty is necessary in our everyday life and in the institutions, we should prevent people from being blind loyal. Thus, instead of obeying every order totally out of loyalty, we should build our own value system and let it make judgments for everything. If ever an order from you company contradicts with some laws or regulations, it is our duty to disobey it and give warnings to the superior. And these behaviors do not conflict with being loyal because that is beneficial for the company in the long run and it is of the greater good.

To sum up, without loyalty, our society might well be in a state of disorders and immoral; with only loyalty, society would be full of frantic and blind people who are useless, even harmful to the promotion of society. Only through a moderate attitude towards loyalty can we gain progress and avoid its possible destructive effects.
