TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."

History makes people wise, as the Francis Bacon claimed. It seems that value of history study relies only on the reference of our daily lives as the speaker asserts. This assertion fails to account the magnificent value of history in other realm of human civilization. As for me, the value of history is not limited to the fields of daily lives but extends to almost every aspect of human civilization including academics, culture and society.

Admittedly, history supply us instructions and inspirations during our daily lives. Through the analysis of the historical events, we come to know not only what happened but also why and how they happened. We may understand why some people are on the summit of success while others fell to the abyss of failure. Knowing about the past contributes much to the wisdom of ours in daily lives. The proved right principles like being loyal to our friends, being kind to other people and being ambitious to pursuing our interests are followed when we make daily decisions. Mistakes such as being dishonesty, greedy may be avoided to. Besides the instructions the history provides, we get inspirations by the study history. Luminaries such as Beethoven, Edison, will embolden us in face of adversities. Some of us will probably be stimulated by those achievements in history and follow those great achievers in our daily lives. In this sense, history is valuable in our daily lives.

However, the value of history is not limited to the daily lives. To begin with, history is of great value in the study of humanity subjects. Heroes and tales contained in the history supply affluent materials for the arts such as literary, sculptures and painting. Leo Tolstoy's great work "War and Peace" is based on the war between Napoleon’s France and Russia. The creation of masterpiece of Beethoven's symphony "Hero" is inspired by the significant historical events --the revolution in France and its hero Napoleon. Many sculptures of the masters like Michelangelo are based on the historical heroes and events. Humanities are integral with the great value of the history study.

Moreover, studying history contributes to the cultural identity. When we learn the history of our people and country, most of us will have the sense of pride.We are proud of the luminaries and heroes among our ancestors and naturally recognize the greatness and glory of our culture. For instance, the study on 5000 years Chinese history give us Chinese cultural identity and make us united together no matter where we go. The study of history is important origin of people cohesion and cultural identity.

Finally, history reflects the character of civilization development and may predict the society's perspectives to some extent. History tells us that if we don't consider the problem of environment pollution and lack of natural resources, we will follow the steps of those civilizations disappeared like Mayan civilization in Middle America. The happening financial crisis in capitalism society indicates that absolute freedom in economy without proper adjustment of government may also leads to problems. The Great Depression in the 1930s and the new policy adopted by Roosevelt is a vivid example of this. The study of history is a good reference not only for individuals in daily life but the whole society in development.

In sum, the speaker underestimates the value of the study of history. The study of history has value not only in the realm which is relevant to the daily lives but also in more broader sense. History is a good reference for the whole society, is essential in humanity and contributes to the cultural identity.
