The speaker asserts that how children are socialized today determines the destiny of society, however, unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society. While this assertion has merit, it is an unfair generalization in that it fails to account for other empirical evidence serving to discredit it. In my view, I agree with the speaker that we indeed have not yet learned how to raise children to build a better society, but the socialization of children is not the key factor in determining the destiny of society.

Admittedly, I consider that today's education put undue emphasis on individual development that leads students to compete to win whatever competition but overlook the importance to cooperation. However, at today' age when everything is becoming increasingly more complex than past, cooperation is needed in any endeavor, no matter in the science, business, politics and so forth. Unfortunately, at school level, our education, even if knowing the importance of cooperation (in fact, it is one crucial character of socialization), still encourage students to be the "NO. 1". Besides, at family level, with the development of society and technology, the population is also becoming increasingly larger, the majority of today's children is the single one in one family, especially in China, in this situation, parents and grandparents' education usually accentuate too much on their children themselves, which cause egoism. Of course, egoism is not helpful in building a better society.

Nevertheless, I disagree with the speaker that how children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Socialization means that one could understand the society's culture and value system, and then could live within it. It is true that understanding the society's culture is basic for one to live within it, what is more, without knowing oneself culture, the one might get lost in his or her society. Whereas, socialization is not necessarily the key factor in determining the destiny of society. The direction of a society's development, or the fate of a society is based more on how its people educated and skilled. Consider that if a child could be compatible with around people and environment, or has a better understanding about his or her society's culture, but know little about mathematics, physics, politics and so on, how could the child build a better society in the future. After all, whether a society is great or not, it is determined by the material quality of people's life a lot. Being skilled in intelligence which help do well in science, being well educated in emotion which help be a good companies to others, and being well socialized which help understand the culture, the three factors might determine the destiny of society.

In sum, I agree with the speaker's statement that we have not yet found a good way to raise children. It is true that no matter school or family, education put too much emphasis on individual cultivation which lead egoism that is not beneficial to build a better society. On the other hand, I disagree with the speaker that the socialization of children today determines the destiny of society in the reason that being skilled in intelligence and well educated in emotion are the two indispensable factors to direct the development of a society.
