TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 494 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2009/8/12 14:32:59
The effectiveness of education, which equips the next generation with skills and social norms, influence the destiny of society of the future. In my view, it is too extreme to assert that education will be truly effective when designed to meet every individual needs and interests. Instead, how to achieve the true effectiveness of education should be distinguished under different circumstances, ranging from primary education to college instruction as well as considering such special students that have disablility or talents.
While it comes to primary education, it is better to regard students as the same. After all, every individual is supposed to receive the fundamental knowledge when they are young. Consider, if education is designed to meet the each youngster's needs and interesting. Although I am not an expertise in development philosphy, commen sense would inform me that children are engaged in playing and thus they will choose to play rather than acquiring basic knowledge. Thereby, education should be the same that teach the fundamental knowledge as well as some basic norms when students are too young to choose what they would learn.
Only when students grow up to some mature levels, such as when they enter a college or university, when they have formed their own values and thoughts, can they are entitled to have freedom to choose what they learn at their will. An striking example is that nearly all the colleges and universities around the world provides abundant courses for students to choose. As a result, most of the students are more interested in the courses they prefer and thus have better academic performances during the period of university. Accordingly, education designed to meet the individual needs and interests is effecive after the students have formed a mature habit of learning and thinking.
In addition, there are two kinds of students, involving disable students and gifted ones, who should be taught in individual. Disable students who cannot catch up with others when they received the similar education as other average students. Therefore, they should be supplied a special education, which can really transmit the knowledge, accounting for their moods and ability. Similarly, the gifted ones would have a outstanding progress when they were education which applied to each of them.
At the same time, it must be illustrated that special education is not equal to the education where students could do whatever as they are willing. For compelling instance, the 'values classification' project has once performed in the United States, which allow students to think on their own and parents as well as schools have no rights to crticize whether is wrong or right. Eventually, those students are not able to judge the wrong and right, indicating the failure of the project.
To conclude, aside from meeting some inappropriate needs and interests of students, it is basicly effective to design education according to the grown-up students' preferance as well as some other special students in need of more attetion and care. |
