In the issue, the speaker asserts that in order to meet the contemporary needs, the modern constructions could take the precedence over the preservation of the old buildings. Although the assertion may strike a chord in the hearts of most readers, while I have my reservations. Because despite of the fact that most metropolis are facing the most urgent requirement for ground, we should also know importance of the old buildings, which are not only a precious record of the past but also a emblem of a city, a country and the whole human race.. First and foremost, there is no denying the fact that different from the old buildings, the modern ones represent the current development of the society and embody the strength of the city. Additionally, based on the advanced technology, the skyscrapers can accommodate more and more residents to help the city avoid the population problems and thus to increase the citizens’ living standard by providing more superb housing estate. Moreover, as the city’s new landmarks, it will be the quickest way for the foreigner to know the contemporary culture of this energetic place. In this circumstance, the speaker’s assertion about the modern buildings has some merits. However, although we can receive a lot benefits from the modern buildings, it doesn’t mean that we can remove the old buildings outrageously in the name of the contemporary needs. We should put the emphasis on the preservation in virtue of factors in two respects. On one hand, if we exorbitantly emphasize the urgent contemporary needs for ground, it will inevitable cause the disaster of the old constructions and some vital vestiges. As we know, like the old saying goes “architecture is a history recorded on the stone”, the old buildings are the amalgamations of the aesthetic value, social value, cultural value and so forth. They are not only the reflections of the past but also a vivid textbook, from which we can learn the thoughts of the old people and their attitude towards the aesthetics. If they were destroyed only because of the confliction between the old buildings and modern buildings, it will be a great loss for the whole human beings. On the other hand, for decades, unfortunately we find that too many modern buildings in some important metropolises, has made them become so similar to each other, while losing the each style. One illustration of this point involves Holland, among many European cities, Rotterdam’s scenery is so unique thanks to Dutch’s consciousness of the preservation of the old buildings. During the period of the World War II, after the German’s air raids, Rotterdam was reconstructed by the every bricks collected in the debris by every Dutch citizen. All of these contributions make Holland different from the others but not lost themselves in the forest of concrete. Finally, instead of the mutual exclusive, the modern buildings and the old constructions can together play a indispensable role in transmitting value from the past to the present. We can’t imagine the images of Britain without Big-Ben, Paris without the Arc of triumph and Peking without the forbidden city. All of these are regarded as the totems of the peoples delivering the precious value they hold. Besides, surrounded by the modern buildings, we can easily find that even the two kind of styles can also live in harmony to tell the same value they cherished even better. In conclusion, I commit to a optimal approach that we need to find a balance and take an all-sided considerations between old buildings and modern ones, upon which we depend to achieve a better social atmosphere to connect the past and the present.
