I concede the speaker's claim that all faculty's spending time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach would be beneficial to the quality of instruction at the college and university level, for the college and university should be closely related to the society.
In the first place, it is true that the new knowledge in the real world, which might not be written into the book yet, would be brought by the teacher working in his field relevant into the class in the college and university. And that would help much while students can contact well with outside world, knowing what is happening in their academic field. Take subject of technology as an example. What we learn in the books about the electronic products can never catch up with what is being sold just outside the campus, for its high speed of developing is much faster that book's updating. However, while teacher's working in professions relevant will surely shorten the distance between book-world and the real world. Another example comes to the subject which needs social operating: economy. It is frequently assumed that teachers who are good at investment in the real word like stocks and trading would be more experienced than those who are not. And from those experience will come the better quality of instruction. So teaching subjects which are connected to the outside world need teachers' more experiences and feelings from the real society.
In the second place, only in case of knowing the quotation of subjects in society will teachers help students with their employment guidance well. The first thing when a student walks out his subject study is finding a job. A recent survey shows that half of the graduated students are not satisfied with their first jobs, for the reason that they know little about the differences between subjects and real jobs. And that pays. It is obvious that situations would be definitely changed if teachers are very acquainted with that which jobs match which subjects and how these jobs work in the outside world. This illustrates the point that if teachers have jobs that are relevant to their courses, they would play a vital role in students’ finding jobs while they are graduating.
However, it should be admitted that there are such theoretical subjects like math and biology, which are seldom connected to the real world, need teachers’ focusing on school teaching rather than spending time working outside. In these fields, advanced theories should be researched and precise experiments should be well operated. For instance, a bacteria experiment need to be looked after everyday with keeping notes, calculating data and comparing to references, for a month or even half a year. And all of these demand teachers and students to concentrate, together. It is obvious to take into mind that it will not be helpful but wasting time while teachers are spending much energy on jobs which may not even match with their new theories.
To sum up, due to the discussions talked above, we may draw the conclusion that the assertion that speakers claims are fundamentally convincing. It is effective to improve the quality of instruction by faculty’s finding jobs relevant to the courses they teach but not all of them.
