136. "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
In our daily life, we have many choice to choose from. We can choose a pair of beautiful shoes from many shopping malls, we can choose where to eat from many restaurants, and we also can choose to travel by air or by train. The existence of choice makes our life better. And the advanced technology, the people's strong ability and courage to undertake the responsibility makes choice possible to be everywhere in our lives.
To begin with, we can not deny that the advanced technology enable us to have so many choice that is impossible for our antecedents. We can now travel from Japan to American just in about 12 hours by air if we want to arrive in America as soon as possible. We can also choose to travel from Japan to American by ship if we want to enjoy the scene of Pacific. And what make these two choice possible? That is the technology. Without the technology of building the plane and ship, we have no choice but to arrive the destination by foot no matter how far it is. So we should appreciate the technology we invented, which makes us have more choice than our antecedents have.
However, there seems to be no choice for someone when he was restricted by his ability. For example, one who was born in a poor family thinks he has no choice in his life. He does not have money to go to school, thus he has no ability to find a good job to afford his family and improve his life. It seems that these facts is true. But if you think more deeply, you can see the reverse side. He can go to school after making money from some basic work. Even if he fail to go to good school, he also can work hard to earn more money. Graduating from a famous school is not the only way to earn much money. So he does has choice. What he lacks is the ability of choosing.
On the other hand, we also confront with some circumstance that seems to be no choice for us because we are restricted by all kinds of responsibility. For example, we can not choose to steal things because it is against the law. We should gain something from others by contributing something to others. This is the social responsibility that exist everywhere in our lives. For another example, we tend to choose live with our family, giving them care and love, rather than choose to live in another city, enjoying the freedom of life, because we are restricted by moral standard. But in one word, we still have the choice to break the law or live alone as long as we undertake the consequences of breaking these responsibilities.
So it is obvious that choice exists everywhere in our lives even if it was hidden sometimes when we lack the ability and courage to choose it.
