题目:ARGUMENT200 - Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

In this argument the author claims that dentists who advertise should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their techniques and the sensitivity of their stuff to the patients. However, careful examination of the evidence he provides reveals some flaws as below:
As a threshold matter, the author should provide detailed information on the responders in the study mentioned in the argument. If there are 300 patients in the examination but only 30 of them have been tested, then the conclusion that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist cannot be regarded as a representative result. Moreover, the author fails to take the ages of the patients into account. If the average age of the men is 50 while that of the women is just 30, it is nature for the older people to get scared thus the conclusion will be unreliable.
Even if the result that more men than women faint while visiting the dentist is reliable, the author’s assumption that less men is likely to go to the dentist because of they got distressed about having dental work done is not necessarily the case. Other facts may contribute to their willingness to visit the dentist although they get scared of the process of the treating. For instance, perhaps more men will be driven by the pressure from of work; they have to clean their tooth in order to have an opportunity to be promoted. Perhaps men are more likely than women to care about a sunny smile for what they have to go for the dentist to whiten their tooth. All these facts can eventually make the men more likely to go to the dentists than women.
Even assuming that men is less likely to go to the dentist than women, the suggestion that the advertisement should emphasize on the effectiveness fo their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to the nervous or suffering patients may not necessarily bring benefit to the profit of the dentist. Profit is a function of both revenue and expenses. In order to emphasize about the two important points and let the public know about them, the cost of the advertisement will surely be aroused. If the cost of the overall advertising program have exceeded the income it will bring in, then the suggestion is still not viable. In short, without weighing the revenue against the cost, it is impossible to make any profitable conclusion for benefit of the dentist.
In sum, to better support his conclusion, the author should provide statistics about the age and other basic facts of the patients in the experiment, and he must provide evidence to show that fewer men will go for dentists than women. He should also make a reliable forecast of the cost in the extended advertising program.

字数不少。内容偏题,没抓住主要逻辑漏洞。思维过于离散。

大概3-4分吧。继续努力。
