TOPIC: ARGUMENT45 - The following appeared as an editorial in a wildlife journal.

"Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic region. They search for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of a year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed, and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the decline in arctic deer populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea."

The author claims that the decrease of arctic deer populations is due to recent global warming, which leads deer being unable to migrate across the frozen sea. To support his claim, the author describes arctic deer’s' age-old migration pattern and cites a report that local hunters point out the populations of deer are smaller. Careful scrutiny of the providing facts, however, reveals little credible support of the claim.

First of all, the author unfairly assumes the climate's warming could lead arctic deer death. The author provides no evidence for his assumption. He does not explain that according to feasible science research, the physiology of arctic deer will change ,eventually causing death of them ,because of the global warming. Lacking such evidence it is equally possible that deer could change their own habits to get accustomed to the environment, which do not exert much influence on their populations.

Secondly, the author concludes his claim relies on a report from local hunters who report just because they capture less deer when they are hunting .It is entirely possible that deer’s habitat is much different from hunters' scope of activities, and the time of deer’s activities is also distinguish from hunters’. If these are cases it is no doubt that the hunters could not encounter with deer. Hence, depending solely on this unpersuasive report the author cannot convincing as it stands.

Finally, the author assumes that it is the global warming that causing the decrease of arctic deer. However, even if we admit the rising of temperature will lead deer’s' death, we could not affirm that the temperature of arctic is real increase. Maybe it is because many other places’ temperature has sharply increased that causing the warm on a worldwide scale. But it is entirely possible that the climate of the arctic has only slightly reduced or even increased. Subsequently, without real determination, I cannot be convinced still.

In sum, the claim is not well supported. To strengthen this claim the author should supply science bases of deer's death, and also should affirm whether and how the climate in the arctic has changed .Moreover ,the complete investigation of deer populations in entire arctic is necessary. Without these evidences, the author cannot convince me that the arctic deer’s' reduction is the reason of
changing their living habits because of global warming.
