It is universally acknowledged that a society's ideas and values can be reflected by the appearance and behavior of its members in respect that how people look, dress, and act determines their attitudes and interests. However, although each person appear to obtain different experiences and conflicting values, they can hardly deny the fact that it is quite idealistic that we can tell about any person’s' attitudes and ideas by watching their appearances and behaviors. As far as I am concerned, certain groups’ appearances and behaviors are a function of their attitudes and values.
To begin with, admittedly, I am inclined to agree the speaker's statement insofar as some certain persons' appearances and behaviors do inform us of their attitudes, values, and ideas. To these people, after all, their dressings and behaviors exactly provide signals about their values and attitudes. And, a society's values, an ideology which is made of each individuals 'values, tend to be extremely crucial to their growth. Actually, it is of great convenience to distinguish certain groups of people from others by observing their dressing and behavior. For example, college professors always wear austere clothes and glasses, and their sight appears to be so acute to us; considering those actors, however, they desire to show others their most beautiful aspects through wearing magnificent clothes and gracious jewelries, and charm fills with their sight. No one have encountered the scene that professors wear just the same clothes as actors.
Aside from the situation which I have mentioned above, nevertheless, there is no escaping the fact that the way people look and dress doesn't result from their attitudes and values but rather their climatic and work environment. Obviously, it is inappropriate to judge people's values and attitudes from the way they look and dress when taking the factor of their climatic and work environment into account. Moreover, the way people look and dress usually leaves us a misunderstanding about their personalities. Consider the example that several large corporations compel their staff to wear the same uniform at work. Do all the staff long for wearing the uniform? The answer is certainly "no" rather than they feel like doing so. That people tend to bundle up in cold climates while going with few clothes in hot climates is another case in point.
Finally, how people act can belie their real attitudes and values. In fact, it is the outside pressure brings people with huge burden, making people strive for adapting to the challenging environment. Moreover, the way people act cannot be dominated by their desire. As a consequence, the result in which people's real attitudes and values are concealed by the distance between reality and ideality. For instance, in China, Do those students who study hard every day really love those boring disciplines? Certainly, the answer is "no". Since feeling greatly competitive when graduating from colleges, they have to use their leisure time in which they are able to do something they really like to study for the purpose of acquiring a career that can satisfy their huge financial necessity in the future. Thereby, we cannot obtain their attitudes and values from their action.
In summary, from what has been mentioned above we can come to the conclusion safely that the values, attitudes, and actions of most people have little to do with their appearances and behaviors.
Undeniably, it is high time that any government, which is blind to this, may take some relevant measures to encourage their public to exhibit their personalities. |
