I agree with the claims that faculties should spend more time keeping pace with the outside world in relevant courses they teach, which will improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level. However, it is absolute to require all faculties to do this. For some fields like pure theoretical brunches, there is no need to work outside.


As we all know, the pace of technological advancement, social changes and academic progress are so rapid that knowledge contained in recently published textbooks often lags current developments. Students major in politics, economics, finance or computer science are required to know what is going on recently on the subject. Take computer technology as an example, the operating system, the cache or the USB device are updating all the time. You are still reinstalling your Windows operating system while others are trying to enjoy the new functions of Vista if you are ill-informed. Therefore, students will be beneficial from professors who are working in the processions outside the academic world, which may help the teachers to keep pace with the quick development, while the knowledge in the books somewhat lags behind.


Moreover, by keeping abreast with the changing demands of work as a professional, professors can help students who are serious about pursuing a career in that field to make more informed career decisions. If the course is digressed from the need of real world the students may feel bored and uninteresting and can not concentrate on the lessons, which will make the lessons meaningless. In addition, practical working experience in the non-academic world relevant to their major will improve the faculty’s understanding of the courses they teach as all subjects are related to some extent. One professor in my university always compares machine components with human’s organ, which makes his explanation more clear. Even though the knowledge is unrelated to the course, we can open mind and view which may benefit in the future.


However, there is no need and unwarranted to expand this broad claim to embrace the entire faculty in the college. For those who work in the pure theoretical field, such as mathematics, literature, history, philosophy, etc., they may find it difficult to combine their teaching with relevant professional fields and it is also meaningless to compel them to gain the experience in the practical work and it may distract them from the research and instruction work they should concentrate on. Newton proposed the Laws of Gravity when he was in the countryside where is far from the madding world, Kant founded the German classical philosophy while he never left his hometown—Konigsberg. It is foolish to suggest these people to working outside for their own thoughts are the greatest wealth of humankind.

Moreover, the teachers who are not in the pure theoretical field should also pay attention to the balance of the time which they spend outside working and the time they spend teaching and researching for the reason that spending too much time and energy will inevitably have some adverse influences on their teaching and researching. It is known to us that many professors in architecture take projects outside; there is no denying that they keep pace with latest progress, but putting too much time on them will make regarding class not so important. Some professors even request students work with them in projects which makes students stay up late even all night so as to too tired to take class, which does harm to both students’ health and studies.



To put it in a nutshell, some faculties should be required to keep pace with the outside world while others not. For those faculties who are essential to work outside, they are expected to balance well between working outside and teaching to make sure that the main time and energy is still on the education.
