I agree that artists, especially those outstanding ones whose masterpieces can deeply touch our souls and impress our society. However, art critic also has its unique value and it is necessary for any time and any art work. Just like a good cook, without the taste and appreciation of gourmet, the special design and deeply thought might never been explored and appreciated by the public.
From my point of view, the artists give the society of lasting value because they are the hearts and eyes of our society, they try to find the truth of our time, express the inner desire and feeling of human beings, thus inspiring us for beauty, grace, kindness and for a better word. Beethoven’s symphony of fate shows great courage and strength, while Leonardo da Vinic’s painting Mona Lisa expresses the peacefulness and elegance of a normal lady. These brilliant works show the ethos of their times, inspire the people and still deeply touch us today. On one hand, great artists are often perspicacious and beyond their times, therefore they can find something of permanent value and lead the trend?. On the other hand, artists are full of imagination and skillful in their major, so they can convey their thoughts and feelings in a graceful but sometimes also profound, and even abstruse way.
Just as mentioned above, full comprehension of art work is not so easy, so one important part of the value of the art critic lies in that they can be a bridge between the artists and the general public. With a good knowledge of artist and a long time of study, an art critic usually have a deep understanding of certain works and then he can interpret the subtleness of the works to laymen, although at times the critic’s understanding may not be the original thoughts of the author. But what’s more important, sometimes it is the appreciation and critics form various perspectives that broaden the horizon and meaning of a work. Because only by associating with changing circumstances, old masterpieces could show new meanings and impress different social classes in different times. A famous saying ?There is a thousand readers, there is one thousand Hamlet? proves this case sufficiently. This is an important reason why some outstanding works enjoy permanent fame and applauds.
The value of art critic also lies in that it works as a filter: evaluating a work and telling what’s valuable from banal ones. It is especially important in a society where information and knowledge is explosively increasing. No matter classical or contemporary art, with the comment and recommend of experts, we can get to know them quickly and find what is fit for us. Imaging that facing one hundred novels without any recommend, we may be confused and don’t know which will interest us. Someone may argue that often the critics give disappointing, even misleading evaluation; therefore many brilliant works are not appreciated and accepted in the artist’s times. It is reality because great artists are often beyond their times. But it is also the critics in the following generations that appreciate those works and give a justice evaluation. In this sense, the arctic rightly selects what is suitable and useful for our own times and society.

In conclusion, art critic is a necessary complement of art and has its unique value. Great artists create geniuses works and leave a deep impression on our society, while the critics help the general public getting close to those works and having a better understanding of them.
