The speaker contends that look, dress, and act which reveal people’s attitudes and interests play an important part in society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. I strongly agree with this contention, for two reasons. First, dress also is served to distinguish and reflect a society’s values. Second, different country has special manners and behaviors which is easy to be identified.

Consider the effect of dress in different country. Kimono, the representation of Japan reveals the civilization and history of Japan. Although kimono is oriented from dress appeared in Tang Dynasty, after more than one thousand years changes, kimono with different colors and styles is considered as traditional dress for Japan. Jeans primarily prevail in western of America remind people of life style of cowboys who are free and comfortable. Or saree which wraps Indian indicate the religion in this country.

Or consider the different gestures in the world. As we know, the gesture in each country may have different meanings. If we use this gesture wrongly, we may offend our guests. Take the hand gesture fro example. The gesture of thumbs-up means different conception in different country. In China, it means praise. In USA and UK, it means good. In Australia, it can be seen as insult and humiliation. When you stand on the road, it tells people you are a hitchhiker. In Japan, when a boy behave toward a girl, it means he want to ask her out. So people should pay more attention when we use such gesture.  We can also find the difference between countries from the gesture of OK. In USA, ok tells agreement or promise. But in France, ok has the meaning of nothing or useless. In Brazil or Turkey, it has the content of name-calling. Thus, various gestures contain the values and ideas in each country. Moreover, we also can from the manners identify people’s country. Englishmen are gentle. They will open doors for women from which shows they respect women. They also comply with public rules. They have little talks behind others which are seen as impolite. In a word, the history of forming such traditions is very long and many factors such as religions, ethic, or legends are involved in the procedure. With the prevalence in the world, such traditions are accepted by different country as the symbolization of one country. From the tradition people behave, we can see what they admire or advocate and what they hate or dislike.

In sum, appearance or behaviors are served to reflect social ideas and values. We can easily judge one person which country does he or she comes from through their look, dress, and act.
