How can we define a culture? The culture is the patterns of behavior and thinking that people living in social groups learn, create and share. The author asserts that rituals and ceremonies help define a culture and groups of people, without which they will have difficulty identifying their culture, I strongly agree that rituals and ceremonies are indispensable parts of a culture, however, they are other means by which a culture can be identified and preserved.
To begin with, rituals and ceremonies are vital parts of a culture. A society's culture, in anthropology, includes their beliefs, behaviors, language, ritual, art, technology and so on. Neither [None] of them can be omitted [neglected]. Many common rituals and ceremonies can reveal some facet 复数?] of a culture. Take dragon boat festival [首字母大写] in China for example, every year in [on] that special day, people set dragon boat festivals and eat glutinous rice dumpling [dumplings filled with glutinous rice] . This ritual can be derived from hundreds of years ago for memorizing the death of the famous poem Qu Yuan. Similarly, in western [Western] countries, there are also some important ceremonies such as the Easter Day, the Christmas, the Hallowmas and so on. From such rituals and ceremonies can people distinguish one culture from another Moreover, they constitute the main parts of a culture. ['Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture.' As a result, they are of great significance.
Additionally, without ritual and ceremonies, people become to feel lack of sense of belonging [...people may have lost the sense of belonging] . It is difficult for people living domestically to imagine living without certain rituals. However, as to people move emigrate for work or study reason, although some have been permeated [assimilated] into the mainstream of another country, they do feel lonely especially on some ceremony days. It is mainly because that some ceremonies and rituals represent certain spiritual belief. Also, some countries such as America, comprised of immigrants from different countries, thus as a whole America has little cultural identity of its own anymore although there are wedding and funeral ceremonies in the US. Because of such a multiplied culture, it is sometimes difficult for most Americans to identify and maintain a unique culture.
Nevertheless, to identify a specific culture, rituals and ceremonies are not the only means. According to the definition of a culture, one should take other aspects into account. As, what language do groups of people talk in, [speak] what do they eat, what rules of moral do they have, what are the characteristics of their art and so on [可以简略为their languages, their eating habits, their moralities as well as their charaters] . For example, there are 55 different minorities in China, each of them has a distinct culture, and one can tell the difference among them simply upon their dress or their manner of speech. Although they do have different ceremonies and rituals, they are not the primary way to maintain the culture identity.
In conclusion, as rapid changes in technology in the last several decades have changed the nature of culture and cultural exchange [这个culture exchange出现在这里是干什么?] , it is necessary to preserve total assimilation among cultures. Rituals and ceremonies are significant are of vital importance [重复?] to identify a culture. However, they are not the only means to preserve a culture. |
