TOPIC: ISSUE4 - "No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study."
WORDS: 631 TIME: 0:56:30 DATE: 2006-10-17
I agree that it will serve the advance to bring outsiders' knowledge and experience to that field, since nowadays the world present a connected web with complicated subjects and resources, which could be only understood in the context. Moreover, even the fields themselves, are now divided into more detailed sub-domains, which ask for expertise from both other sub-domains and fields. Nevertheless, any anticipating scientist should be careful to avoid risk which may be brought by enterprise from other fields so that it won't reduce the field's own purpose.
By interacting in complicated ways, any field today needs enterprise from other fields to make significant advances. It seems to me that the modern academic world is so big that no one can deal with any subject by just himself. A striking example involves the several revolutions in 20-century architecture. The modernism architecture has cause many social problems during 1970s, building living environment too rationally and lacking of humanity. To change this situation, the architects used new methods which were developed by modern philosophers. Anti-structurism philosophy provided new rules to obey which really changed architecture designing a lot. Moreover, considering the environmental problems which classic architecture could bring, new technologies and theories are used, which came from the domain of biochemists, heating engineers and environmental scientists. Architecture's way of development is a way which influenced by both social and natural science.
Another example witch can also adeptly testify the issue involves the field of astronomy. Nowadays astronomy is trying to explain the structure our universe, as well as how it develops. Mathematics are used to calculating the distances and orbits of stars, based on the observation of high developed probes. Only after the Einstein shift was exactly observed by technocrats, theorists can tell how the universe is distended. Such observation builds on the manufacturing of telescopes which are enhanced by optics and electronic engineers.
To develop the statement above more striking, the sub-domains of scientific fields may be a good example. Since our knowledge amount today is too huge for each person to obtain, the specialists' fields become smaller and smaller. Consider linguists, for instance, includes ancient-language linguists, cryptologists and so forth. Each sub-domain of them require knowledge from the nearby fields and other linked fields to make significant advances.
Although the outsiders' knowledge is needed to make advance in any field, the insiders should be careful keep a strong sense of their own enterprises, or the development may be distorted.
Return to the example of architecture above, an architect should consider many social and technological elements, however, he might confuse in the ways in which such elements interact. Useless buildings may be designed as a result considering about aesthetic issues too much and neglecting functions. Vulgar building will be a result of considering technologies too much and not carefully enjoining them together. Such lessons have been presented in our society a lot, whose consequences include resource waste, bad social influence and controversial politics. The detailed example involves the Sydney Opera, designed in 1960s to 1970s. Although the Sydney Opera is a successful landmark for the Australians, and it was the outcome of aesthetic theories and structure technologies, it was too costing and hard to build such a shell-like building. The program lasted for nearly ten years and several government of Sydney downfall because of its construction.
To sum, in my opinion any field in our world is linked to others, none of them operates in a vacuum. To understand them well and develop them properly, expertises from other fields are not dispensable. As long as the experts themselves keep an open mind to diverse knowledge, and as long as they insist their own abilities, the diverse knowledge and experience will come to a long way toward engendering significant advances in modern scientific world.
