提纲: 1. 驳斥last year the five best-selling cheeses at their newest stores were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Misconsin a,去年卖得好的cheese这个结论可能来自于美国的某一个洲或地方,不能代表全国的国产cheese卖得都好 b,这个fact只能说明wisconsin的cheese\受到欢迎,不能说明其他地方的国产cheese受到欢迎。
The memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughtout the United States points out that the best way to improve profits of all the stores is to discontinue stocking many of their varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. In order to surport this argument, the memo cites the fact that last year the five best-selling cheeses at their newest store was all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. The memo also points out that a survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeeses among its subscribers. As the following discussion shows, the memo’s argument is not well supported by the evidences.
First of all, it is not reasonable to stop stocking the imported cheeses based on the fact that five best-selling cheeses at the new store are all domestic. The memo fails to provide any imformation about the places where the store selled domestic cheeses best. If the newest store opened in one place of the country, I am sure the distribution quantity of a part of the stores could not reprensent the whole margins of the chain stores. Eventhough the newest stores all around the country has the same domestic best-selling cheeses from Wisconsin, it juts proves the production of Winsonsin are popular among the customers. It is possible that the cheeses from Ralley are so bad that nobody wants to buy them. In reference to the newest store, there is some ignorence by the memo that they can’t dictate all the stores’ best-selling cheeses are all made by United Stated. Also the memo unfairly assumes that best-selling means profits. Common sense informs me that profit results from the revenue substracted by expense. Only if the revenue keeps constant or improve while the expense is fixed or decreases, the profit will increase. However, there is no evidence to testify this point. According to the analysis, the reason for discontinuing the imported cheeses is not credible.
Secondly, the memo improperly infers from the survey that the domestic cheeses are very popular in USA and they will make much more profits than that imported. There is not evidence provided by the memo to make sure the authenticity of the survey. It may be the case that the survey is made in NC. States not to the whole contry. Or pahaps most of the people subscribed the magazine prefer the domestic cheeses to the imported ones. Therefore the popularity of cheeses made in USA could not induced from this uncomprehensive survey.
Thirdly, the memo fails to provide other alternatives which can increase profits to comparewith stoping stocking the imported cheeses and that the recommendation mentioned by the memo is the best effective becomes obviousely questionable. It is possible that to improve the service of the stores such as sending cheeses homes for customers will attract more potential customers and gain great profits. Or the stores could make use of some activities to increase profits that the customers will get one more piece of cheese if their phachasing quality reachs to some point.
In conclusion, the argument is unconvicing as it stands. To strenghen it, the memo must provide clear evidence that the domestic cheeses are more popular than the imported ones. To better assess the memo’s argument, I would need better evidence to show discontinuing imported cheese is the best choice to increase the profits---maybe comparing this way to other aternatives.
