Issue11.

"All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."

Whether all nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world’s most persistent social problems or not, as the speaker recommends? I agree that such a global university will indeed have the advantages which the traditional type of university could never compared in solving worldwide problems. But whether the global university is necessary for all nations to support or whether it is feasible to settle a university like that? Many problems we have to confront.

We have to concede that such a global university is incomparable in solving common problems all over the world. The students, coming from different countries, with different educational perspectives and experiences could work together and share their knowledge to affront difficulties.Apt examples involve the horrible epidemic AIDS which cause troubles for almost all the nations in the world, and lately happened avian flu, which warned the world to the point that it might threaten the safety of human species. If there is a global university where students and faculty can give valuable advices on how to cooperate and how to communicate with respect to participating nations, then there would be closer global cooperation on technology, medical care education, and global aid, which reduce the detriment brought by these global prevailing diseases.

Nevertheless, the setting of the university has quantities of problems of its own which could badly affect the initial objectives and even remove the foundation to achieve the goal.

First, it is nearly impossible to build a organization to manage the university on behalf of all the participant nations. A global university that supported by several nations means it belongs to all the nations that participated in. While each of these nations is single and has its own culture and political ideas as well as separated methods to build a relatively excellent university. So it would be a big problem in running this global university.

Secondly, it is clearly impossible for the global university to meet all the needs of participant nations. The resource of the university is limited even through it is supported by several nations, while the social problems that the countries have to face are limitless. How to decide which problem should be involved in the consideration of the global university and also who can do this without drawing any complains from the participant nations? Take Iran for example, this country has been making effort to do research on nuclear power for civil using as it claimed. What if it would be one of the participant nations and ask the global university for help?

To sum up, the advantages of the global university tells its own tale. But whether it is feasible to set up this kind of university and whether it will run in the initial direction depends on more details and more cooperation among nations.
